The good: As far as ski areas go, the area has great terrain including some really nice intermediate groomed runs.
The bad: No high speed lifts. The new Chair 5 seemed painfully slow.
We skied up to an accident victim with a very serious broken leg. The ski patrol were on the scene quickly and were very courteous and professional. It seems like some new snow machines to assist with evacuations would be useful. The victim was waiting in a toboggan at the bottom of the slope for a machine to arrive. I will say this: The small ski area where we regularly ski has heavy powerful snowmobiles specifically for this purpose, and they respond swiftly.

It took 2 and a half hours to get a picture for a season pass I had already purchased online. They only had one person servicing over 75 people while two other ticket agents waited to sell daily tickets to virtually no one. Despite repeated efforts to help problem solve with staff (like being willing to pay a partial rate so our families wouldn't have to wait hours to ski), they were unresponsive or dismissive. Worse yet nearly everyone in the tightly packed line were unmasked. Very disappointed.

Fun day skiing the runs on Lookout Pass. Smaller hill but great prices and family friendly. We skied mid-March when Covid was just being an issue. They had additional hand sanitizer out and we were just careful in the restaurant and lodge. Ski gear and activities make for good social distancing.
Fun day to spend as a family in the fresh mountain air.

This is something everyone needs to experience. It's not a hard ride. Be sure to have plenty of "good light" and a jacket and nibbles along the way. The first tunnel is really dark, cold and wet....but fun!! There is historical markers along the way to learn more about the trail and a shuttle to bring you back up. Yes, you do have to go back through that long tunnel, but what an experience it is. Plenty of other tunnels as well along the way down. Enjoy!! We sure did!!

While living in the northwest for 30 yrs, I decided I'd like to experience one of north Idaho's gems, a The Hiawatha Trail. It's 15 miles of groomed old Milwaukee railroad bed. It has a 1.6 percent downhill
grade and 9 tunnels and 7 tressels .
The labor day weekend happens to land on my birthday this yr so I made resv. A month ago and invited my kids and my family to join in. This weekend turned out to be raining and windy but it wasn't going to stop us, the beginning of the trail you start out with a 1.7 mile long tunnel to go thru which was pretty exciting. Once thru it you head down hill at a slow pace and over many 120 to 220 foot tall tressels and very senic. It took us about 4 hours to complete and took lots of picts. Very fun and highly recommend this very outdoorsy adventure.

Lookout Pass Ski Area is where many locals learned to ski. It has three lifts that serve several runs from beginners to expert. The front side is the Idaho side and has some challenging runs (Bonanza is my favorite). The backside is the Montana side and has one good blue cruiser (Rainbow Ridge) and two blues that have some challenges near the base. The newest runs (Red Dog and Marmot) go down towards the North side and is a high level Blue. The lifts are not high speed but run at a decent pace. The chalet is very friendly and has good food.
This is a fun hill with not that many people.

Passing the the mountains at such a high elevation, the views, and the drive itself. In the summer, the ski area offers other ways to use the facility. I just drove there for the view and as a preview for winter, as this will be my first winter in the area

Great trail, but don't take your pet, they won't allow them on the trail even if they are on your bike or in a burley.
Great accommodations at the Hercules Inn in Wallace when you are done, but DON'T eat at the Smokehouse BBQ.

Lookout Pass Ski Area is located right off I-90 on the Idaho/Montana border, some of the runs actually go through both states!
This is a really friendly comfortable place to ski, with free-style, black diamond and plenty of intermediate slopes. There aren't long lift lines, and run by the nicest people. The BierHaus/Chalet has affordable full-service beverages and food, with a separate level for families with children and you can reasonably rent your complete ski package.
We stayed at the wonderful Cowboy-Up Montana Roadhouse (Bed and Dinner) in St. Regis, Montana to complete the perfect weekend get-away.

If you are driving through this area, a stop at the pass is a must! Gorgeous panoramic views are perfect for pictures. Take a jacket, its chilly up there!
