A short 3 hour drive east from Johannesburg, takes you to Wathaba Rainbow Falls farm.

The main reason to visit are a 10km and 4km hike on the property. The 4km one is truly utterly spectacular. Green mossy forests, big trees, swinging vines, cool mountain pools and stunning waterfalls. Don’t miss Bald Ibis Gorge at abut the 2km mark on the 4km hike, it will take your breath away.

Valley View Cottage is the newest and most modern addition to the accomodation, with amazing views over the valley and a rock pool to laze around.

Mountain Creek Cabin is the most remote and away from other people. It’s pretty rustic/basic although it has everything you’d need and you certainly get the feel of a far away private cabin in the woods.

The above accomodation are small with shared open-plan living/kitchen/sleeping area, so not suitable for all families. The are also cheaper camp and dorm room options.

Would have given 5 stars but the reception team could do with better customer service and a smile would not hurt too much. Could have been a cultural mismatch but not enough to ruin our stay.

I’d be happy to return.

We went as a party of 14 people of all hiking abilities, there are 2 main walks which incorporate 7 waterfalls over 30 feet there are many more smaller waterfalls, there is a lovely pool to swim at the bottom of a specular waterfall, there is a small outside chapel in a very romantic setting. There is accommodation if required with a large communal kitchen and plant of hot water for showers. Very good value for money.

The 10km Lynx Loop was a lovely and brilliantly maintained and marked hike. It had lovely views and waterfalls. Suggest you take a swimming costume if hiking in summer. Cost R90 per person but well worth it. Call the number on the gate on arrival. Took approximately 4 hours at a leisurely pace for two fairly fit people.
