Neighbourhood: West Hollywood
For years, West Hollywood has been known as a hub for the LGBT communities in Los Angeles. Today it still maintains the title, but has also become the “it” neighborhood for the entertainment industry’s up-and-comers. Producers, directors, writers and aspiring actors call this area home. Known for great boutique shopping, vintage clothing stores, home décor shops and fitness studios, West Hollywood is a grid of wide boulevards and narrow residential streets. The neighborhood also has a concentration of the most avant-garde restaurants in Los Angeles (rivaled only by the burgeoning restaurant scene Downtown). A trip to the iconic Sunset Strip, with its many clubs, music venues, hotels and flashing lights won’t be forgotten.

There's really nothing to "do" here.

If you're into interior design or architecture, though ... it'd be a great visit. Very uniquely designed building, outrages exterior colors. And it acts a s "mall" for interior designers. So all of the stores are furniture and interior decor.

... I would only recommend this to my friends who are city planners or architecture students.

I worked in the Blue building for about 10 years...watched all the changes and different restaruants come and go...it's fun to walk through it, just remember these are furniture stores so you cannot purchase any items w/o decorator/designer...

1,200,000 square feet multi-use facility for the design community located in West Hollywood, California. One of the buildings is often described as the Blue Whale because of its outsize nature relative to surrounding buildings and its brilliant blue glass cladding. Blue Building and Red Building are open. Red building is fast being completed. NOT retail, but if you get very lucky, some floor samples might be for sale. Jess Kalinowsky Bon Vivant!

There is no sign indicating that the outdoor area at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, the part with the shooting fountains across the street from a West Hollywood public park, is in fact PRIVATE PROPERTY and you'd risk being chased by a security guard screaming "mam, mam, mam..." should you step anywhere near the fountain. I was told that I was trespassing. I actually didn't believe the guard because there's absolutely no indication that it's not open to the public so I visited the West Hollywood Police Station, which is conveniently next door, and they told me that it's is indeed private. I think they should put a sign up, I came away feeling embarrassed and humiliated by the screaming guard chasing me (and my SERVICE DOG). I wouldn't want anyone else to go through that.

I'm having to go to the design center a lot as I'm furnishing a new home. I think this place has some weird vibe since none of the shops have many windows. It makes most of the people who work there very grumpy and angry. And, if you are not a designer, get ready to be abused. They really don't like anyone who is not a designer...and they are not even very nice to designers. Maybe they should think about who really pays their bills. I would like to say that there are a few wonderful exceptions to the grumpy comment - Jen at A. Rudin, Mark at Paul Ferrante and Lars at Atilier Rugs, sutherland guys are all great.

As a professional interior designer of many years, I have visited twice a week and enjoyed every minute of it. Beautiful show rooms, friendly staff, good events. The architecture is stunning. If you don’t have “business“ there please at least drive by. It’s very special.

and I mean Futuristic because everything in there is so modern. I have gone to their theater a few times to screen award driven movies that are put on by the Unions so we can see a screening ahead of time and vote for the awards. But when you are in there you can walk around and see how modern and fresh everything is inside. They have showrooms for many things, including galleries for artists, A must go when you are in West Hollywood

The red building auto forecourt has a stunning modern light sculpture hanging in the center. Hidden from view unless you walk (or drive to let someone off) into the building entrance. Worth seeing. Well-done. A surprise indeed.

I love this BlueWhale! As a designer living in Asia, it gives me a chance to see all of the latest fabrics, furnishings, lighting and accessories and bring me back into the design world.
