I will state that I/we went during the Superbloom of last year. The wildflowers were really beautiful, and while I'm sure they bloom each year, during the droughts there will probably be a lot fewer. It was a really nice day spent "out in the sticks". But.....do NOT go unless you have a full tank of gas and carry water to drink or use. There is nothing for most of the way after you leave "civilization" or until you return to it. Other than that, I packed a picnic lunch and we had a great time. And, actually, I think we went during May of 2017 rather than June.…

Even though this is a rather short drive from much of the Central Coast Communities few people either know or discuss visiting here. While people "infest" the entire area when Wildflowers bloom, it is worth a visit to see such interesting Alien landscape. Soda Lake is frequently almost dried up & full of millions of tons of salt....thus brine shrimp live here. While it is a little known National Park, who knows if it will remain protected in the future. It's very solitude is a plus...but it will become a dangers visit if you get stuck after dark unprepared. There is little or no facilities, no cell service, and AAA will likely not help. While there is a dirt road that goes from end to end, you will likely need to rent a four wheel drive. Another issue is that the drive here is quite curvaceous & those who are prone to being car sick are in for it.…

Went to this area in April of 2017 to view the spectacular wildflower bloom. Only saw Soda Lake from afar since we were there only for a half day, so I cannot say much about Soda Lake. Facilities at Carrizo Plain National Monument are very limited; most of the monument is served by dirt/gravel roads, some of which are quite teeth rattling. Highly recommend doing your research before going so as to get the most out of your visit. This is one of the National Monuments up for review by the Secretary of the Interior.…

This year's spring bloom was pretty spectacular because of the rains. Miles and miles of yellow flowers. It s a very hot place in the summer months. Otherwise, outside of the bloom, it's rather deserted. Good for cyclng with low traffic. There is a rock formation with Native American paintings but needs to be accessed through a reservation only guided tour. Good for birding, wildlife, rattle snakes, antelope.…
