Founded in 1798, Old Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, known as the "King of the Missions," is a National Historic Landmark. The largest of all the 21 California missions, it is home to a community of Franciscan Friars and is open daily to the public in the Franciscan tradition of heritage and hospitality. Facilities include a Retreat Center with day and overnight programs for spiritual renewal, multi-function meeting spaces, a Cemetery open to all people, Mission Gift Shop, Historic Church and interpretive Museum.

Though they try, Mission San Luis Rey is not as exciting as some if the other missions in California

We did the self guided tour on a Sunday afternoon. It was nice & quiet. I appreciated the history of the native americans.

Excellent two to three hour visit to understand the mission system in California. The church, museum, and grounds are well maintained and staffed.

I have had the opportunity to visit all 21 California missions and still enjoy visiting San Luis Rey. I have visited with my family several times and have been to the mission with my daughter's 4th grade class field trips when they studied California history....More

I highly recommend a visit on the tour option. There is so much history; without the tour with the historian, you would miss the knowledge behind the mission.

the tours start at 1pm from the front gate to the museum.
