Neighbourhood: Hollywood
Hollywood undoubtedly conjures up images of movie stars and high-end lifestyles, and to this day, tourists flock here from around the world to see the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame, Chinese Theatre and to catch a glimpse of the famed Hollywood sign up close. Celebrity impersonators and crowds give these areas the feeling of an amusement park while many clubs and hotels fill up around the weekends for late-night partying - the Hollywood club scene is a haven for thumping music and table-side bottle service. But parties aren’t the only way to enjoy this area, many visitors come to the neighborhood to sit back with a picnic to watch a performance at the Hollywood Bowl and those looking to stay fit trek along nature trails in the Hollywood hills and in Griffith Park.

The Egyptian theater now houses the American Cinematheque which is an organization that specializes in showing films of historic importance. Films include everything from film noir, big budget spectaculars, arty films, and foreign films. They have the latest projection equipment and film presentation is one of the best in the country.
Many times, after the showing of a film, they will have speaking guests that will talk about the production of the film.
The theater auditorium has been carefully modified to improve acoustics. The beautiful original walls have been left alone, and just before the film comes on, special panels move out and cover the walls for purpose of improving the sound. The lobby has also been modified. The only things that remain from the original Egyptian theater are the auditorium walls, the ceiling, and the forecourt.
And, as any good movie theater should, they still sell popcorn, drinks, and candy in the lobby.

Grauman's Egyptian Theatre is the other main Theatre on Hollywood Blvd, site of the first main premiere film showing cinema before the Chinese, but to me not as impressive, worth locating and soon to be owned by Netflix, really!

I was disappointed that so little of the original ornament was left inside the building. The theater's ceiling is cool, but that's about it.

Sid Grauman's first theater was The Egyptian which opened in 1922. If you are not careful, you could miss the entrance as it is set back from the street. The exterior of the theatre is glorious; theatres certainly aren't built as flamboyantly now - today they are crammed into multiple screens. The theatre itself has recently had a 15 million dollar renovation. Inside, the theatre looks amazing and has a beautiful "Ra" with outstretched wings on the enormous ceiling. The American Cinematheque screens amazing films both old and new here. We enjoyed an evening of Laurel and Hardy and other Hal Roach films.
Search out this marvelous, but lesser known theatre. The tour here is very good and worth the time. But do yourself a favor, attend any event you can here for a taste of old Hollywood. Be sure to visit El Capitan and Sid Grauman's Chinese Theatre as well; both are just up the same street.

Don't forget to swing by the Egyptian Theatre! Just as gorgeous as the Chinese Theatre, just with a lot less handprints and a lot less people dressed as Elmo or Batman.

Everyone talks about the Chinese Theatre and skips over the Egyptian! The Egyptian theatre was closed for a convention when we visited, but its unique architecture and beautiful courtyard warrant at least a walking visit when in the area. Unique Egyptian architecture is fun and neat to see.

This theater is beautiful and elegant. I lived in Hollywood as a child but never got a chance to see it in person. I recommend coming here if you want to see a movie.

Transport yourself back to 1922, Hollywood California. Hollywood is in its hey day and King Tut's tomb has just been discovered in Egypt. Egyptian fever has hit the world. With a seating capacity of 2,071 seats and a special appendage to the stage for opening prologues and performances, "Robin Hood" is shown at Hollywood's first-ever movie premiere at the Grand Opening of the Egyptian Theatre on October 18, 1922, with an admission price of $0.75. This theatre was Sid Grauman's $800,000 brainchild and he oversaw every last glorious detail. Only to birth the world famous Chinese Theatre across the street five years later in 1927. These were the good old days of Hollywood, to be sure.
As Hollywood declined in later decades, and the economy bottomed out in the late 1980's and early 1990's, this once lavish movie palace fell into such disrepair that it was closed and sold to American Cinematique for $1 with the provision that this historic landmark be restored to its original splendor. After 2 years and a nearly $13 million renovation, the Egyptian Theatre arose from the ashes just like a Phoenix, in December 1998. Fast forward to October 5, 2014 and here I am at the (original) Cleopatra screening and special event. What a treat! What a beauty!
The restoration did come with a few structural changes, but you can still feel the energy of its exquisite past. A fantastic display of historical artifacts in the lobby. I could only imagine the celebrity-filled gala premieres that took place here back in the day.
I got to watch this legendary 1934 film
as well as attend a Q&A session afterwards with a Hollywood film historian. Too cool!
For those of you who missed this festive event, the American Cinematique hosts tours of this theatre once a month for a very reasonable price. Embrace American film history and go see this place.
Hooray for Hollywood!

We took the docent tour that is offed once a month. The guide was very knowable. You get to see and learn about the history of the theatre. You get to go into the singers box ( go and find out what this is, there are very few left). You also get to go into the projection room and learn all about how these work today , but also how the work when they are actually running film. They did a great job on restoring this theatre.
