If you are in La jolla you just have to visit Wind-And-Sea Beach which is located right a the water's edge of WestBorne avenue in downtown La Jolla where the surfers ride the most dangerous surf, around huge boulders, some partially submerged and some half visible in the crashing surf. Its a trip not to be missed.

Spent a week at our VRBO home rental at Windansea Beach. Had a wonderful time searching for shells, making sand castles, people watching, ship watching and enjoying the surfers.
Our ages ranged from 3-62 and we all were impressed by the accessibility, cleanliness and pure beauty.
I would’ve liked to see some public restrooms, but I’m sure the valuable real estate made it prohibitive to cover all the beaches.
I recommend Windansea Beach for families.

Beautiful beach. Loved the area for a perfect sunset. Sitting watching all the surfers. Can't wait to visit again.

Not too many rocks, not as crowded and plenty of street parking. Great spot if you want to get in the water.

I rented an Air BNB that was one block from this beach. Went every day and enjoyed watching the waves and surfers. Beach is long and narrow with a strip of sand, but enough to sun bathe. Also watched an incredible sunset from here.

This beach is small but mighty. You can enjoy the sun on the shore or try your hand at surfing this short but epic wave. Still standing and regularly maintained is a palm frond structure that has been used in the past for a lifeguard station.

I love Windansea Beach. It is one of those small gems that is not quite as popular as Ocean Beach or Pacific Beach. I go here for epic pictures, awesome surf and sightseeing. it gets crowded every once in a while just because it is a small area but you will not be disappointed! I am a professional photographer so I attached one of the shots I got there.

Some beaches in this area can get very busy. But this one is normally less crowded as it is a bit less know. The sea can get a bit rough so be careful

This is a beautiful beach. Very different! On the day we were there it was pretty rough so I might not recommend swimming there but a great beach to just relax and listen to the waves or watch sunset.

Is there enough sand to enjoying some R&R in the sun?

There is sand st some portions of this beach and people do come and enjoy their time there. And it is a beautiful rugged rocky beach with wonderful formations to explore. The surf is rough for swimming, but is good for surfing, if you are a local the surfers know. La Jolla Shores is where most people go for Beach sitting, walking and swimming. More crowded though.

Is this a decent beach for a takeout dinner picnic at sunset?

Yes!!! Bring a towel to sit on. Parking can be difficult especially in the summer. Note: anything glass is outlawed from all the beaches (including wine bottles/glasses). Also, Windansea is a fairly ‘primitive’ beach (no restrooms). Just good to know in advance.

Hi Chris/others who commented,
I'm curious if you recall what time of day you were there for the wedding? I am getting married there this coming May and have checked when low tide should be, but I'd like to confirm with those who have been there at that time of year! We're having the ceremony at 4pm. Just curious if you know the best time of day to be there.
thanks!

How is swimming here in mid-June? (I am an experienced swimmer and also know this is not Hawaii and the water will be cool).

It'll be fantastic. We were there over New Year's, & while we didn't have an interest in braving really cold water, there were plenty of surfers and swimmers wearing wetsuits in the surf. June is perfect for most.

Are there any hotels located close by or on the beach?

previous responders are accurate regarding hotels on the beach. We were blessed to be able to stay in an expensive boutique property right across the small beach road (nothing in this area is allowed to be right on the beachfront) so it looks right at the ocean. Phenomenal place. I reviewed it. Pantai Inn. like another reviewer mentioned, it might also be worth looking into private rentals along that stretch.
