There is no doubt that this gorge is stunning/dramatic/I've run out of superlatives, HOWEVER..... it is a victim of it's own success.
This morning, and on many occasions this year, the road has been packed with parked cars and mini-buses, making driving through the gorge to the south coast hazardous. Today, the newly built car park was full and there were at least 80 cars parked on the roadside.
Since the closure of the Kotsifou gorge, due to a massive landslide, the road through the Kourtaliotiko gorge is the ONLY access to the south coast in the Rethymno Prefecture, and all the parked cars are causing frustration to residents and visitors alike and, in the event of an emergency, could cause serious delays for the emergency services.
PLEASE will the tour organisers and hotels take on board that there are problems, certainly until the Kotsifou gorge is re-opened, and perhaps 'temporarily' divert their guests elsewhere.
Also, we are, at the time of writing, in a state of High Fire Risk and there is a proposal to close off the two pedestrian entrances to the gorge, should the need arise. Visitors should be made aware of this.

On our way to the south of Crete we happened to come across this place. We saw that a number of people got out to have a look, so we decided to do the same. We certainly did not regret this because this place was breathtaking. It is well worth stopping here and walking down to the beautiful waterfalls.

This was probably one of the best things we did in Crete. We started at the arch before walking down a few steps to get to the river. We walked through the river the whole way. In total it took our 2 families 3 and a half hours to walk/swim through the river (including a lot of swimming and picture times). At the end is a stone bridge and a lovely taverna with a beautiful wooden decor and good food too. I wouldn't recommend young children or the elderly to participate in this gorgewalk as it at times the only way to carry on with the walk was a swim through deep water for approx 15 meters max. There was probably around 5 of these major pools altogether. Overall, this was a really amazing experience and I highly highly recommended that those who are able to participate in this walk do so.

This canyon is beautiful and worth a trip no matter where you live in the island. The best part is the tiny little church on the side of the road and all the eclectic religious art inside of it

This is a spectacular gorge and highly recommend that if going down to Plakias you drive through here and take time to look at the beautiful scenery. Its a wow factor all the way through.

This is a beautiful gorge on the way from Rethymnon to Plakias. The way down by the stairs is not suitable for people who are afraid of heights or people who have mobility problems.

Along the winding mountain path to get back to where we were staying we stopped in the gorge to take some photos and noticed a hiking trail. What a fantastic find it was. The steps down and little paths carved into the gorge made for a gentle walk down to the river below. The views along the mountains and down towards the coast were spectacular and the place was near empty! Not nearly as tourist led as other gorges in Crete which meant we had plenty of time to take photos, walk at our own pace and just take in the natural beauty of the trail. We also noticed a longer trail going much further upstream but we didn't follow it this time, however I will be returning to explore some more! Worth a visit to this hidden treasure!

If you're in a hurry, just drive through and enjoy the scenery. But if can spare some time and if you're fit enough to do some stairs, it's well worth the effort.

6 months back a small team from Rethymno we walked throw the gorge inside the river. The landscape is amazing and the palm trees as you approach the beach make the place tropical.

Hello, fellow travelers, I'll be visiting Crete in June. I'll stay a couple of days in Rethymno, and I would like to hike though the gorge. Does anyone know how to get there? Can you do it via a regular bus? Do you need to take a tour?
