The trail is really nice, from forest to climbing rocks to flat grass lands. The view from the mountain is worth it.
We hiked the 9km only to end up doing 13km. Some of the directions aren't very clear. But they did said they are busy updating the route signs.
We cooled of in the swimming pool and sat down for lunch.

The waiters was bad, they did not add any of the extras we asked for. Some of the food was really good other not so great.
All and all i will visit again just keep the food order simple.

Recently had the pleasure of hiking the 5km witstinkhoud trail at rustig.

Don’t be deceived by the short distance, the hike took approximately 3 hours to complete and in that time the elevation gain was approximately 350m.

The trail is well marked and traverses a variety of landscapes from covered forrest to open areas with stunning protea trees.

A moderate level of fitness is required and be sure to carry at least 2l of water per person.

The views from the trail onto the valley below are absolutely stunning.

One word of advice, when driving to the farm, the last 2km stretch of road is not in the best condition so a vehicle with a high ground clearance will be an added advantage to avoid any anxiety.

We did Rustig Magalieskrans (blue) combined with the Kareeberg (green) route - 12.8 km 609 m elevation in one day. Stunning views. We did a slow comfortable paste - 5 hour moving walking without rest and 7 hours including stops for coffee and lunch. Note steep elevations and climbing. NOT recommended for unfit or people with fear of heights. The ladder climbing made the elevation gain much easier. Also great climb is winter when cold.

We get there in the morning and drive up to park next to reception. Before cars are when off, we’re told we can’t park there. Fair enough, saw the signs, they said no parking only after we parked. We drive down to the visitors parking and march back up to the reception area. Meanwhile other visitors are parking in the exact spots we were chased from. No complaints no requests for them to move. Yes, those cars didn’t belong to black South Africans. Strike one!
Strike two, we are not asked if we are day visitors or are booked in to stay. We pay for the hike, only to find out its included in the fee we paid to sleep there. We get our route maps and the detailed explanations shared with other groups aren’t shared with us. I ignore that and we hike
Get back, we check in. we change we swim. The longer distance hikers come back later, we buy wood to braai. We eat and another group of young black city slickers is swimming. The staff is instructed to pack away the cushions we’re sitting on, as they have to be locked away before they leave. This sounds like nonsense to me, but no fuss, we let them take the cushions
We wanna swim some more but we’re told we can’t because they wanna maintain the pool. They need to put chlorine in the pool. I ask the workers is this normal practice, I’m told it’s not and that, this wouldn’t be happening if it were white people who wanted to and were swimming. So we go and ask why this is happening and we’re told, because you people are sweaty and the water is dirty. Strike 3 and we couldn’t with this behavior. There was the “I did you a favour by letting you Braai there” comment, the constantly being checked on like children and then the “I have black friends and deal with black people all the time” nonsense after calling us sweaty like its exclusive to black people, when it’s not. Janine the lady at reception who said this nonsense then proceeds to call the owner after we asked her to apologise. She tells the owner we swore at her and called her names, when none of that happened.
Owner gets there, doesn’t ask what’s happened. Just tells us if we can’t abide by the rules, we must leave and he won’t tolerate us swearing at his manager. This man clearly waphapha and doesn’t give a damn about quality of service being delivered to everyone. In the midst of trying to explain what happened he asked us to leave. He said nothing about a refund or explained his reasoning. He said he didn’t need our money, we needed to go because right of admission is reserved. Yhuu WoW SA. WOW!!

My wife and I visted Rustig with some of our friend for a weekend. We had a decent house in which we stayed and they come and cleaned the house on a daily basis.

But that is where is stops. The first morning we asked for a buffet breakfest. The manager told us that breakfest will be served at 8m but we requested that it only be served at 9:30 since most of our friend have young children. The manager was extremely rude with this request. The buffet was seriously disappointing.

Lunch time we booked a picnic. The food was very dry and tasteless.

We wanted to watch the rugby in the bar which closes at 5pm (cannot see why) and the manager complained again.

The last stow was the last morning when the manager told us that he will not make us buffet for breakfest because we didn't eat all the food the previous day (which could have served 50 people).

I think the venue has a lot of potential but the management was seriously disappointing. We felt as if the manager felt that we were doing him a favour to stay at the guesthouse

On a Saturday morning in July, we hiked the 5 km trail. It was a challenging but beautiful effort. The trail is well indicated and at several points the views are great. Good training for the old bones.

A great hiking spot in magaliesburg surroundings .
Lovely 13 km hikes available and stunning vieuws , Accomadation is wonderful for hiking , please don’t expect five star Accomadation otherwise you will be disappointed .
However it is beautiful to stay over and have just the normal family Accomadation ! It is very suitable for say visitors and have a few hours hike and perhaps visit one of the restaurants in the area or close by or on your way home .... please if you love hiking DONT give this one a miss !!! Rustig has a great 5km hiking trail with breathtaking views of the surrounds. We have previously hiked here and thoroughly enjoyed it. For our most recent stay we booked the 10 sleeper farm house for our group and though the natural beauty in the area is lovely, the accommodation left much to be desired. The house lacked attention to detail and seemed to be in a state of neglect - two cupboard doors were broken and hanging from the hinges, the towel hook in the bathroom hung off centre, furniture was broken/in a state of neglect, the sofa on the stoep was filthy (we had to throw a blanket over it just to sit on it). Many kitchen implements were missing i.e. bottle opener, bread knife, salad spoons, serving spoons. For a house that was billed as being inclusive of cutlery and crockery this should be standard. The cleanliness of the house was also in question - there was a persistent odour of old cooking grease in the kitchen. We found an unwashed greasy oven dish in the oven, and a dirty pot with liquid in it in the cupboard.

The staff were friendly and obliging, but one get the feeling that the owners/management don't keep an eye on quality standards. My recommendation - go for the hiking - don't stay for the accommodation.

We were booked in for the weekend in the Farmhouse. On arrival the correct keys were not provided - we had to wait for 45 minutes to get the correct keys. There was no one to check us in as the management team went away for the weekend. We were told that the next day two ladies will visit us to complete the necessary documents and to give and to give us gate permits - they did not come the next day - so we had no gate permits. We struggled to get in and out of the gate - took us about half an hour with several phone calls to management to let us out and in again. The security guards follow different procedures to alls frustration.

Our friend's car (and two others) was stolen as there is no secure parking next to the houses or tents. The Saturday evening upon return of a wedding (at a venue close by) there were lots of people sleeping in their cars in the public car park - how is that for security?

The farmhouse had no hot water - the geyser was not working. The house caters to 10 people but there is not sufficient cutlery and crockery - only 8 dinner plate, no side plates, and 4 bowls.

This place is not accessible for the disabled. This after I phoned and specifically asked whether they where set up to handle wheelchairs / walkers and was told they were. Got there in the middle of the night only to find that we couldn't reach our accommodation. We had to drive back home after attending a wedding at 01h30 in the morning. They also refused to refund us. I will definitely be reporting them and I will NOT recommend them to anyone!!
