The best known villages with fortified churches in southern and south-eastern Transylvania are Biertan, Viscri, Prejmer and, to a lesser degree Malancrav, Harman and a handful of others (when I say a handful, I mean you don't need all your fingers to count the rest...More

We stayed in Malancrav in one of the village houses. This is a very interesting experience, and is quite basic accomodation if you don't mind this kind of thing. The village itself has changed little over the centuries, and old ways of farming are still...More

Beautiful old buildings, very fairy-tale. Malancrav in the better setting, in a quiet village. Malancrav also has painted walls inside. Biertan has a very old lock which is a masterpiece of its time.

The Saxon fortified churches in Transylvania are not to be missed. They are like beautiful jewels in the jewel box of Transylvania. Although Biertan is the most famous, there are many scattered over the southern region of Transylvania waiting to be discovered.

This Saxon fortified church is quite beautiful. The frescoes on various walls remain largely in tact. As do the religious paintings dating back centuries. It was very quaint, having to get the key from a house in the village. The un-rendered local stonework gives the...More

During a two-week trip through Transylvania in Romania, we arrived in Harman village. Transylvania is home to hundreds of towns and fortified churches built between the 13th and 15th century by Saxons. It is a haven of architectural heritage. Just walking through the high surrounding...More

Old Transylvania Saxon Villages are a real treasure of Romania. A past that remind us of the great saxon heritage. No wonder that Prince of Wales fall in love with this amazing place of Romania. Brasov - Sighisoara - Sibiu represents a triangle full of...More

We saw several fortified churches in Transylvania. When visiting the castle-church of Heltau/Cisnadie we got a tour guide, who gave detailed information about the castle church. Apparently this fortified structure gave great security to few families (around 150) in the area. The church still has...More
