Beautiful!
Jan 2017 • Couples
We walked past their in January 2017, and decided to have a look. The Church was open and I was astonished at how beautiful it was. I actually read up on the Church and found out my family had a lot to do with the Church decades ago.

Absolutely stunning! I felt at peace and even though I am not a Church going guy myself I will most definitely attend a service their any day!

Annual Rose Show
Oct 2015 • Couples
Beautiful flowers by locals enhanced a beautiful old church building, as well as wonderful organ music. We also stayed for the Rose Show lunch served by friendly teens from the Girl Guides. A wonderful local tradition.

Understated Elegance!
Sep 2015 • Solo
This Anglican Curch, James the Great, in Somerset Street is the oldest original church building, still used as a church, in the town. It has an interesting history, dating back to 1845, when it was built. As anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of local architcture will know, the architect is Sophia Gray ( the wife of the Bishop Robert Gray).
The talented Sophia also was responsble for the Belvidere Church at Knysna and the charming stone church of St Peter's at Plettenberg Bay. Her distinctive style is apparent in the Gothic style windows and the steep pitch of the roof.
St James is a gracious building which has fared well over time. The interior is calming with natural light streaming in through stained glass windows.
Subsequent additions to the original footprint fit harmoniously into the whole.
Fortunately for me, there was a gardener in the grounds when I visited and he very graciously let me in to have a peek around. All in all, a wonderful experience!
