We are very happy with our decision to entrust the organization of our African trip to Gondwana Tours & Safaris. They epitomize what you would expect from a specialist in tailor-made safaris – they understand our needs, sometimes even better than we do ourselves, and offer multiple solutions to fine-tune the proposal based on budget, preferences, and available time. Our trip was managed by Christelle, who was very competent and responsive and also a pleasure to interact with. Our preliminary discussions were quite fruitful; we learned about numerous possibilities that we hadn't previously considered. After several iterations, we came up with an excellent itinerary.
The trip itself ran exactly as planned. The organization, planning, and logistics were flawless. Considering that the itinerary included three light airplane flights, stays in two remote camps in Botswana, and a visit to a private reserve in Zimbabwe, the perfect synchronization of logistics was impressive. The guides at both Lagoon and Mma Dinare camps in the Kwando concession were outstanding – cooperative and enthusiastic.A word of advice for those planning to visit Botswana in October: do not underestimate the intense heat. Temperatures can easily exceed 40°C for several consecutive days. In mid-range tent camps, there are no air conditioners, so one must find ways to cope with the heat. I used wet cloths and towels, even during game drives, which helped a lot.Overall, it was a fantastic immersion into the realm of African wildlife and a very memorable experience. Thanks to Gondwana Tours & Safaris for making this dream a reality!

This review is a tribute to Mark Hathaway of Gondwana Tours and Safaris, located in Maun Botswana, who helped us plan a once-in-a-lifetime experience in Botswana and the Cape Town Winelands. Recommended to us two years ago by Anna of Africa Adventure Safaris, who had coordinated our gorilla safari in Rwanda and Uganda, Mark was equally astounding in his knowledge and planning skills. Our wonderful family experience was largely due to his efforts.

For our Botswana safaris, Mark recommended we do Chobe and the Okavango Delta. With strikingly different terrains and concentrations of animals, he proved right. We preferred Chobe to Okavango but are glad we experienced both areas. So, too, Mark suggested various tented lodge options, with Chobe’s Ngoma Lodge being a far superior choice to Okavango ‘s Shinde Lodge. Ngoma was remote but modern, clean and well-appointed with creative and well- prepared food, including delicious vegetarian options. Shinde, a Ker & Downey run business operation in Okavango, was a less appealing lodge for its accommodations and food.

Impressive, however, were our knowledgeable and skilled guides at both lodges. Both Sam (Ngoma) and Kenny (Shinde) were attentive to our needs and provided memorable animal encounters. Sam enabled our closeup view of a leopard with its impala kill and a night drive in Ngoma’s private reserve where we watched lions, just steps away, drinking from a stream. Sam also provided a personal touch: he took us to his nearby village to visit the school he had attended and where the children entertained us. With Kenny we encountered a mother hyena with her two babies at their den and a pack of lions feeding on their zebra prey.

Successful travel requires more than a great itinerary; it also depends on smooth transfers. Mark professionally arranged these logistics whether by car, van, or small plane. This last mode was most challenging for us as the aircraft flying between Kasane and Shinde and Shinde and Maun were small and required making several stops (three times up and down).

Our itinerary for the Cape Town Winelands was a different kind of challenge. We knew from the onset that South African red wines were not spectacular, which is why we had asked for wine pairings with cheese and chocolate. We were disappointed with the Waterford and Fairview wineries but enjoyed Delaire Graff’s beautiful wine estate and tasting room and an experienced sommelier who guided our one-hour private tasting, even bringing us extra wines to sample. He also described the cheese from our platter that best accompanied each wine.

Mark arranged our convenient and deluxe accommodations at La Fontaine and La Residence in Franschhoek. Our rooms were palatial (La Residence upgraded us to a two-bedroom villa with living room, private outdoor pool, and amenities that were far above our expectations); and the staffs at both hotels were gracious and helpful. From Franschhoek, Mark had scheduled our Hermanus whale-watching excursion, which was a tremendous success in seeing South Right whales.

Mark worked closely with us for more than one year to make our trip happen. We have him to thank for this wonderful family memory.

While we where on the road from Kenya to Southafrica, Christelle organized for us a wonderful 18 days Tour to the Okavango Delta and the Kalahari.
Starting in Elephantsands we met a huge group of Elephants and the stay in the chalet was perfect.
Next location was Planet Baobab where we had the incredible cute meeting with the Meerkats in the Makgaikgadipan.
After that we flew over the Delta into the Lebalacamp. There we stayd 3 days in a luxurytent with bathtube.
Everyday we had unforgetable gamedrives, with excellent trackers, mostly private.
The atmosphere in the camp was warm, friendly and familiar. The food was plentyfull and delicious.
Another flight brought us to Pom Pom, where we had the experience to meet the wilddogs as well many lions and leopards and all the other animals. Elephants where even visiting our beautiful luxury tent.
Our gamedriver was extremly knowledgeable and friendly. The food was excellent as well.
The last quiet different experience was in the Kalahari in the Great Tao Hill Camp where Onkx and here team took care of us very warm and friendly. Specially nice was that we where the only guests. The meeting with the bushman family was the absolute highlight of this days. We learned a lot about life in desert for men, animals and plants.
But also enjoyed the relaxing swimmingpool and specially stars and total silence.
All in all we would recommend Gondwana Tours and particullary Christelle to all they intend to travel to Botswana.
Thank you very much for everything.

Christelle was amazing and our trip exceeded our expectations, she was able to provide an excellent itinerary within our budget and time allocation. Tailor made experience for less than many package options available through agents in New Zealand. Can’t wait to go back!

Having had a great experience with Gondwana previously (in Botswana), we decided to use them again for our third safari experience. Mark was incredibly helpful in tailoring the vacation for us, which ended up being a combination of 4 nights Safari in Timbavati and 5 nights in Cape town. His knowledge and recommendations were essential in helping us to narrow down the location, the exact lodge, Cape town accommodations and activities, all aligned with our requests and needs, as well as time and budget constraints. We ended up having the vacation of our dreams! Everything was very well organized, and Mark kept in touch throughout our time in South Africa until we landed safely back home :) Highly recommended!

Thanks to Mark at Gondwana travels we had a truly epic trip with 4 couples. From our first conversation regarding the type of experience and the budget, it was clear he has great knowledge. During the trip we left passports and cameras behind and he was great in helping us and follow through. The 3 camps he helped choose were incredible, small, amazing viewing, knowledgeable guides, delicious food. They each were unique in what they had to offer on the game drives and the timing was perfect. (Kwando lagoon camp, Kanana, Shindi). Each day we said “nothing could top today” but each day topped the day before. I wish they could help plan all my travels.

The trip booked by Gondwana tours was absolutely fantastic

Victoria falls was of course amazing. I did zip lining, a helicopter ride and close encounter with elephants. I would recommend any of these. The accommodation at the Phezulu Guest Lodge and the food was great.

In Botswana in Kasane in the Chobe River Area I was blessed with a wonderful guide, Onkarabile Oremeng, who is nicknamed Rem. Both on land safaris and on the river he showed us the best of everything the area has to offer. Extremely knowledgeable and very kind he was a pleasure to be with. The opportunity to see so many lions giraffes elephants and even leopards etc right near the jeep -it was a credit to his understanding of the area
The Accommodation and food at The Old house was excellent

I then flew to the Khwai river private reservation and stayed at the Obana Moremi Lodge near the Khwai river. This was a surpise to me as when the light airplane dropped me off I was expecting to be going as per the itinerary to a lodge called Mma Dinare in the Moremi Game Reserve. Anyway it all turned out very well after some initial confusion on my part as the plane flew away and left me and my backpack with an unexpected person and a safari jeep

This person turned out to be a fantastic guide by the name of LT. Like Rem in Kasane he was extremely knowledgeable and really showcased the area on game drives, day and night. The canoe trip on the delta was very beautiful and I suspect would have been more so if it had been after the rainy season

The glamping tents were great accommodation with a private en suite and outdoor shower . The food was fantastic and all the drinks were free . There was a swimming pool and a fire to sit around after dinner. Wild life came in and around the tents - one night a herd of elephants passed through!

I visited the local primary school and kindergarten - what a treat! Completely funded by the local people and tourist donations, the children learn their own traditional Sen language, English and a local language that other people in the area generally use. See the Kindy kids sing us a song in English was very impressive.

I actually really enjoyed staying in the Khwai River private reservation. It is privately owned by a trust for the benefit of the local people who agreed with the government that they would no longer hunt game in exchange for the trust owning the reservation. Lodges established in the reservation lease the land from the trust and a percentage of profits from tourist activities is paid to the trust. They are still desperately poor and of course I made a donation but the whole trust set up - What a fine idea!

This is my first time working with Gondwana specialist. We were lucky enough to get Steffie..
I contacted Gondwana safaris after reading their fabulous reviews, and I definitely was not disappointed. We were lucky enough to get Steffi as our consultant 🤗
It was a very last minute trip for us, and she put together a trip of a lifetime. and one that we could afford..
Steffi spent a lot of time talking to me and getting to know me so she could figure out what type of camps we would enjoy. Not many people would take the time to do something like that.
And once she got to know what we were like, she literally put together an itinerary for us in a couple of days that was spectacular.
We were traveling for almost 3 weeks, and we never had one hitch. Every flight every camp was spot on.
If we ever had questions, it was so easy to contact her, but we never even encountered one problem. We only contacted her because we wanted to thank her so much after each camp.
The trip is so wonderful that we are definitely planning another one for next summer. This was my fifth safari and by far my best I am only using Steffi from now on.
Thank you so much Steffi for making this a once in a lifetime trip. It meant the world to us.

Thanks sooooo much for your review guys and it was a pleasure to plan this trip with you. Your story of the lions at Moremi Crossing Adventure Camp has been retold many times. I love it! It would be great to hear from you again and plan a new adventure, whenever you are ready. Steffi

Dear Jen

we have prepared a couple of thoughts re our trip to Botswana in August 2022 which was truly fantastic. Our comments are hopefully useful to you:

A. Working out the package/itinerary

We are repeaters and decided to work again with you, Jen because our trip in 2021 was a great success from planning through to execution. This time round, again the process of working with you was characterized by a lot of fun but also again your professionalism, responsiveness, deep knowledge and expertise about the locations etc…due to the great planning and organizing, we never encountered any problems during our trip. And most importantly, we again had a fantastic time, experienced great people in the lodges, had marvellous guides and above all, amazing animal sightings.
