Surprisingly had a good experience. We took hold of a wooden bench and set up our bbq. some family members brought deck chairs, others blankies. there was no rowdy music blaring, nor unhinged drinking. a good mixed crowd just doing their thing. we tossed frisbee and skopped a ball and chatted the fisher men.
the public toilet facilities definitely need a good scrubbing, if not a rebuild.
potentially expensive per person to enter, but i understand the necessity.

It’s a great walk in the city where you can think that you are far away from the urban bustle, but still close to it.

We went mid afternoon and avoided having to pay the R40.00 entrance (R25.00 for children). Did the 5km walk rather than the 12 km version. The walk is gentle and well marked and very well maintained

We managed to see some interesting birds including a pair of malachite king fishers.

You do get to be accompanied by the amapiano music from the farmers market for most of the walk and it is a bit stinky by part of the river - but that’s Jozi for you

Having lived in the area all of my life I did not realise that this beautiful easy trail existed. The trail is easily accessible although the start is a little confusing with little signage. It is not at all challenging and would be perfect for families with young children.

We will certainly return to do the longer route or to run the trail.

A worthwhile weekend outing that you can finish with a visit to the Farmers Market.

A beautiful way to spend as few hours walking through the wooded areas alongside the river. Small tiered rocks add to the bubbling water sounds, birds abound. Summer flowers line the river bank and well kept pathways, you would think you were in the countryside not minutes from the malls and city. Social distancing is easy due to the size of the reserve and it's time to get out and enjoy nature.

Trails are flat and suitable for kids. Distances vary from 2.5km to 5km. There’s also a cool mountain biking trail. After the hike on a weekend you can enjoy the Fourways market which has recently moved here. All necessary COVID precautions are in place.

In these lock down days, after 6 months of staying at home we decide to go out and choose here but it was so much different from the website photos. There were too many people hiking n picnic there although when the day before our visit we called them they mention that they have limited spots for picnic n fishing . For the ones who might think that there is any renting option for bicycles or fishing , unfortunately you should get prepare by your own. Overall,it wasnt a bad expreience maybe we went there on a wrong time of year but it was the last visit for us .

In these covid-19 days of keeping safe and staying at home it's lovely to get out into the fresh air. Modderfontein reserve has walking, cycling and hiking trails, some of which wind down the river, bubbling over the rocks to the larger dam. It feels safe with visible security staff. The area is large enough to make social distancing easy, we saw people in the distance but never came close to them, listening to the wind in the trees, the gurgling water and birds chirping.
When lockdown eases I am sure the restaurant, venue area and brewery will open to add to the enjoyment of a day in the country.

The reserve felt secure, with beautiful trails. We did a 6 km walk amongst pretty flowers and even came across a fish eagle.
We didn't make use of the restaurant down the road as they couldn't offer everything on the menu, which was very limited in any case.
