    The Big 5 minus 1
This Park proved to be the highlight of the whole trip! We spent 2 days visiting and each day had it's own delights & surprises. We no sooner had entered the park on day 1 when our Zulu driver (Christopher) spotted 3 young male lions & we rocketed down to get near them. Absolutely amazing to be up so close & watch these 3 playing with each other, without a care in the world! The lions have only been recently re-introduced and are the stars of the Park, much to the chagrin of the Giraffes. Who have moved to parts of the Park away from the lions, hence we didn't see one! The rest of the drive revealed Elephants, Warthogs, White & Black Rhinos, Gazelles, Cape Buffalos, Baboons, Impala, Zebras, Monkeys, Deer, Crocodiles & myriad Birdlife! Sadly, no leopards!! Our second day started tamely till we came to a creek crossing and met a 30+ family of Elephants, everyone oohing & aahing, until the Bull charged us!!! Quickly into reverse and backwards we went to a safer spot. Heart rates could be heard peaking but an unforgettable experience, one I'll never forget. A very well run Park and a leader in preservation and good to see the heavily armed anti poaching team patrolling!

A very special experience (wilderness trail)
We did a 3 day wilderness trail, which I’d recommend if you like that kind of thing - lengthy walks in silence through the bush, periodically coming across rhinos (plenty of them, some fairly close) , a herd of buffalo, and other animals. Also some stupendous viewpoints over large areas of wilderness. But it requires a certain level of physical commitment. Guides were knowledgeable, facilities were basic but adequate, and good breakfasts and evening meals were provided by a cook who remains in the camp while the visitors and guides are out walking in the day. It’s not for everyone but for those who like it, it would be a very special and valuable experience.

    Amazing morning game drive
Hallelujah - aka Jerome - was our guide for our morning game drive at Hluhluwe Umfolozi Reserve and made our visit a great success. His passion for and understanding and knowledge of the wild animals, plants and birds was a pleasure to witness and helped us appreciate the vast and wild reserve we were guests in. Jerome's willingness to explain the animals' location, behaviour or protection from predators, combined with his great sense of humour, lifted our visit from average to amazing. The extra effort he went to to enable us to watch the elephants come down the hill and cross the road in front of us earned him his Hallelujah nickname! Thank you, Jerome, for sharing your special part of the world with us.

    Saw the big 5..
Part of our Gate 1 tour, we visited this game reserve and did a four hour safari. Our guide took us to so many areas in the reserve, he was very informative. We got to see the big 5 ..it was so exciting, it surpassed my expectations. The reserve is so clean .

So disappointing. Management needs to take a good look at themselves and see where their commitment lies. The most beautiful location offered poor service run down rooms and unappetising food. So sad to see

We spent 4 nights at Nselweni Bush Camp in the iMfolozi game reserve, on the White iMfolozi River - a spectacular setting. The bush there provides food for the soul. Unfortunately, this is hardly what one remembers...

At first sight the accommodation looks relatively new and well maintained, but the illusion soon fades. In line with the trend elsewhere under the management of Ezemvelo KZN Parks, the decline is in full swing. This facility falls in the premier category of accommodation offerings by this operator. It is certainly reflected in the pricing thereof! But one soon has to make peace with the solar power system being in disrepair for more than a year, causing a (noisy) diesel generator to be the only source of power. It is switched on intermittently and unscheduled, affecting many daily routines like bathing and cooking. Also, the water supply used to be pumped directly from the river, but the pump broke down months ago and a tanker therefore makes a long daily trip to refill the camp reservoir. I am certain that a cost comparison of this water shuttling with repairing/replacing a pump will leave one gobsmacked. Furthermore, all the cabin units are fitted with a "standard game reserve" braai (barbecue), comprising a fire coal pan with an adjustable grid above it, attached to a pole. Astoundingly, more than half the coal pans are rusted through, so therefore no fire, no coals and no braai possible. The camp staff have been waiting for as long as the rust has started setting in for the pans to be replaced, their pleas being shrugged off.

It must be stressed that the quality of the friendly, hardworking and meticulous staff is a big mitigating factor. It is clear that they are giving their best without any support from their superiors to rectify the glaring deficiencies.

We went here on our own, arriving not long after opening time in order to see the morning animals. Unfortunately, we were very unlucky and saw little wildlife other than some warthogs, zebras, giraffes and weaver birds. We made it up to the Hilltop restaurant for breakfast from where there would have been fantastic views if it hadn't been misty! However, as we headed towards the exit, our luck changed and we saw four rhinos. Nevertheless, we would have enjoyed seeing others of the Big Five (all of which we saw in the Kruger National Park).

We spent 3 days here, staying at Hilltop Lodge, which was comfortable situated in a natural setting, the restaurant serves lovely food, our only comment is that when there was loadshedding the restaurant has no lighting except a few battery lamps which were inadequate, the waitress really struggled one evening, the food was tepid which was unfortunate, we didn’t complain as there was probably little they could do, however we do think that there hold be some sort of backup plan not only for hot food but for the safety of the staff and guests.

The game drives we did were fabulous, we have been fortunate to visit several around Africa, this is near the top of our experiences, it’s natural and rugged and you feel the difference between here and the Kruger. We love seeing wildlife and weren’t disappointed. It’s a beautiful reserve, well kept, friendly staff, excellent guides and good food.

Hluhluwe - Good infrastructure and neat and tidy Reception. Unfortunately not very friendly and determined to grill guests - we had to provide ID and Passports all of which were photocopied - I don't know why? Accommodation was very good and scenery and restaurant was excellent. Shop was poorly stocked with snacks or food - just a few chocolates. Mainly saw birds and a couple of Rhino.
Imfolozi - Lovely and far more game and birds. Lots of Elephant and Rhino as well as large pride of lion and beautiful Fish Eagles. Roads were mainly good. Unfortunately the exit gate opener person was asking everyone for a tip to open the gate which I thought was not correct for an employee of the Park

We went on our own, and we’ve seen rhinos, elephants, zebras and many other animals. We reached the restaurant on the hill, had a nice time there too. Definitely worth to go.
