A very nice place to visit. The hotel is very clean with friendly staff, the food was delicious. What we enjoyed mostlyA two nights was the Zulu cultural dancers as we were sitting at the boma. Nice bar and many more to mention . We rode on Safari vehicle to the Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve. It was so fun looking of different animals buffalo's and other animals.

Great experience although I was disappointed not seeing the lions 😕. We actually planned to return the next day but due to uncertain circumstances, we canceled. There are shops and restaurants here and from I can remember, there are overnight camps. Tours are available but we didn't know it was required to make reservations for a tour guide in advance (hint, hint 😉). The is a small fee to enter the reserves. We had our own rental and was allowed to drive into the park. Just imagine if one of those big animals would have poop or destroyed our car😳, that would have been hard to explain to the company 😅. I had one episode with the Buffalo near the car and I was like 😬. I would make this an all day trip because there are plenty to see and I would recommend arriving early.

This is a scenically beautiful park, full of wildlife. It is not Kruger, but I really enjoyed my day trip here from St. Lucia. After having visited Kruger on the same trip already, I was mostly interested in seeing rhinos, having only encountered a few of them in Southern Kruger, and enjoying the beautiful green rolling hills of Hluhluwe-Imfolozi. The park didn't disappoint in either aspect. We have seen lots of white rhino and even a group of four black rhinos. Predators were hard to spot on a rainy day (we saw only a hyena near the entrance), but there were plenty of buffalo, elephant, giraffe, warthog and antilope. It was interesting to see animals walking the green hillsides, a totally different sight than encountering them at dry Kruger.

When the cashier at the gate said that she could only accept cash I almost burst into tears. Thankfully she radio’ed the people at Hilltop Camp who said that we could pay there. On our way up we saw many buffaloes and many other exciting animals. After paying and buying a takeaway coffee we continued to explore the reserve. We were very privileged to see 6 lions and many more animals. It was great to show my kids the place where my parents took me when I was younger. My kids loved seeing all the animals and we left feeling privileged and happy!! I wonder if we will see as many animals next time??? 😉

The best experience of any KZN Wildlife accommodation. The chalet was definitely high-class. The staff were extremely helpful and welcoming.

The price of admission for this National Park is well worth it. At one point, we saw a herd of nearly 20 elephants playing in the water. We saw a variety of other animals. The only thing we were not able to find were lions. I would love to have had more time to search for them.

It is always a challenge finding game on a self drive excursion. We entered the park at the Heritage gate and were soon rewarded by spotting a large Buffalo. Off one of the side roads we came across a couple of bulls grazing. Not much to be seen on our way to Hilltop but got the opportunity to chat with a ranger who gave us some tips. We then got to see a big herd of Elephants close to the road with their young. Time was pushing on so we took a route back to be out by 6 pm and on our way came across a Tower of Giraffes a very angry Elephant bull who was wrecking the bush and drove away very fast, saw a wild dog on the road side and then the highlight of the day was a young bull coming down the road from Hilltop camp. Quite a daunting sight. Needless to say we were late in leaving the park and had a lot of explaining to do. Nevertheless this was by far the most exciting self drive game viewing experience ever!

Scenery is great, but without a 4x4 you can only drive on the one tar road running through the park. The worst sand/gravel roads I've seen. I would have expected the office or gate to inform visitors of the dangerous sand roads which are an obstacle course not to be traversed by a sedan motor vehicle.
Not the parks fault, but this time of the year the bush is very, very thick so unless an animal is on the road you will struggle to see any animals. I recommend a stay of 2 nights and one day. That's more than enough time to see the entire park.

Visited this game park on an overcast, at limes misty day, which resulted in us only seeing a few animals. This included a large male elephant, a rhino with a baby several types of buck, and a few zebra. Stopped at Hilltop for a morning cappuccino, which was not that great. The park was very quiet after only being recently been opened since lockdown. Despite the weather, we enjoyed this experience.

Has anybody done the bout trip over the Hluhluwe Dam in the park. I never saw this, and I don't really find it advertised. Is there a cost? Is it interesting or like St Lucia Estuary?
I hope someone has some experience/knowledge.

Grazie!

I am travelling to Durban with a fellow photographer in February 2019. Has anyone got any advice about where to stay and whom to use as guides, so we can get the most out of a three day visit.. we can't afford luxury but look forward to seeing as many animals as we can. John Dickens

We stayed at Chumbi Bush Lodge - an amazingly beautiful house with 4 bedrooms and lots of space. Definitely recommend even though it is down a long dirt road.

Wij verblijven in November in St. Lucia, en overwegen om vanuit die locatie met onze eigen (huur) auto naar het natuurpark te rijden; kan iemand ons adviseren over hoeveel tijd het kost om van St. Lucia naar het park te rijden?

1 hour drive from St Lucia. leave at 5.00am morning Gates open at 6.00am. that is a nice time to go. Buy a map at the gate and follow the Routs. the Animals move around. you might go in and see nothing or you might see a lot. As the people drive pass you ask them. They are all friendly and will tell you where to go what they have seen or what you can see. they exchange information. There is parks inside where you can stop and eat Drink and Toilets. take your own food No restaurants inside. Binocular vat important The Lion not easy to spot b

I can't seem to find a website to book accomodation at either Hilltop or Imfolozi....I tried heritage but they no longer book there, as have said the accomodation needs some TLC!
Can any one help with accomodation links to there or alternative options nearby?

Hi,
We are visiting S.A. for the first time in July on a self drive holiday. We would like to make a day visit to Imfolozi en-route from Durban to St.Lucia. Can you recommend the best gate for us to enter the park to see as much as we can before exiting on the main road to St.Lucia?
Thanks

Go in at Imfolozi and out from Memorial gate.
Hi all,
I'm planning a trip through South Africa, we're going to drive from Jo'burg - Cape Town (September 20th - October 18th). We're staying in Kruger NP for 4 nights/5 days. And now I have to choose if we either skip Hluhluwe-Imfolozi or Addo Elephant NP. We will be staying in St. Lucia already, so Hluhluwe is kind of on the way (we'll plan a full day for it). For Addo we have to book 2 nights accommodation in order to have at least 1 full day game drive. So it's not at all on the way. (I've been in Addo before and absolutely loved it, that's why I'm still considering it).
Soooo.. which one would you skip and why? Also if we decide to go to Hluhluwe, do we need to book a game drive with a ranger or is self drive doable too?

We are planning to visit the Park sometime next year. Best suggested time of year? Camps which you can recommend? We are only going to stay in the camp for 3/4 days. A suggestion for our route inside the reserve? Should we include the northern part as well? Thanks!
