This tour out to Halifax Island with Heiko is like touring with your best teacher ever.
We were so impressed by Heiko's extensive knowledge of nature, history, and the sea. Any question we asked him, he had an answer for. When we passed a grave on the shore, he rattled off the name, birth and death dates, and what was known about the guy's passing. He identified every bird we saw and told us about the different species and how to differentiate between them, as well as what their habits are. He had photos of the penguin population on Halifax before it was decimated by guano miners, and he told us lots of stories about what went on and why ("it was the wild West").
The waves were pretty high the day we were out, but we felt safe. He clearly knows what he's doing and has a wealth of experience (surfing, diamond diving, sailing, rebuilding his boat) to draw from. He stood up in the bow talking to us while the boat went up and down, and at one point even brought us hot tea/chocolate.
We loved it and got lots of great photos, though not as close up to the penguins as we would have liked. Need a longer camera lens.

Hyko is the great guide you want to have when you do a tour. He knows and share a lot of his knowledge. He takes time to show you everything (dolphins, pinguins, Mola Mola), he is not watching the timing and will spend the time you need. Thanks Hyko

During the trip, the captain told several interesting facts about the animals, the history of the island and the surroundings.
That day, we were very lucky to a whale swimming next the boat.

You will be treated to an unforgettable experience on the 2 hour Zeepaard boat trip from Luderitz harbour to Diaz Point and Halifax Island mostly because this is not just any old tour being run by a hired guide, but you will be in the reliable hands of owner/skipper Heiko Metzger, who has been interacting, surfing, windsurfing, fishing, boating, sailing and diamond diving in Namibia's harsh and unforgiving Atlantic Ocean for over 40 years. Heiko is one of the few dedicated people who passionately advocates for the conservation and protection of our valuable and fast declining marine life and seabirds. Namibia's once rich marine resources have been exploited and plundered relentlessly to feed human greed ever since the first Europeans arrived, crippling already fragile ecosystems so badly that it is hard to believe that they can ever recover. You will learn much about Cape Fur Seals, Heaviside Dolphins, Humpback Whales, Southern Right Whales, Gannets, Terns, African Penguins, Petrels, African Oystercatchers, Cormorants, Pilchards, Anchovy, Cob, Rock Lobsters, Mussels and Oysters and hopefully you will take the message home that our oceans need to be protected NOW, more than ever. Highly Recommended!

We were the only couple on board, on a nice day, but with large swells. The team is very professional, always felt safe and under their control. The trip takes one out past a small island with seals, to one with lots of penguins and other birds that allow you to get close enough to photograph. At all times the boat keeps its distance, and you feel like it is an environmentally sound approach. Great views of the birds. The captain knows his stuff, and shares his knowledge with you, but also gives you the space to enjoy. He puts the boat into the right place for photos. All round worthwhile trip that is great value for money. The views of Luderitz and surrounds from the boat are awesome as well. The hot chocolate while watching the penguins was an added bonus. Bring warms clothes!

We really enjoyed our trip and felt it was well priced compared to trips elsewhere in Namibia, and far less crowded and commercial.
We were given a good insight into the Marine Protected Area with plenty of time to look at the wildlife. It was just amazing to see the penguin colony.
Luderitz is worth a visit and this is the trip to do whilst you are there.. but do take some warm clothes with you.

We had a really nice boat ride and the captain was very friendly. The hot chocolate and blankets were a thoughtful extra. However, it's very expensive in my opinion for what you see (for a student at least!). Despite that there's not a lot to do in Luderitz so it's probably worth doing if you're there for a while

Nice boat ride.
Positives: blankets, hot chocolate.
Negatives: cold, wildlife far away, price may be slightly too much.
Advice: if you've never seen penguins, seals or dolphins, then get all your warm clothes(seriously) and go.
If you're on a tight budget; or have seen all these before, don't count on close encounters, you can skip it!

Hello, I have read that it's a bit hard to find the exact place where the boat departs from. Could someone tell me where it is please?
Thank you!
