Vakona is a small reserve for lemurs rescued from being pets. There are brown, black and white ruffed and bamboo (as well as 2 golden Indri on a small island which can be viewed across a small river). The first two species will climb on...More

This would be the great experience if this is the first day in Madagascar. That's was our experience. The first lemur, the first so close, the first... When you step on the Island and lemurs are coming to you, touching you or even jumping on...More

We spent a day at Vakona park but did not stay overnight at the lodge. The lodge itself is gorgeous and has one of the better gift shops. The lemurs appear to be taken well care of and are separated by species as to not...More

A visit to the private reserve was a thrill for our kids. It is still debatable whether this is a rescue park, or a tourist trap. Nevertheless, although we are not experts, we did not see any mistreatment of the animals. The crocodile park is...More

completely pointless.. was sad to see wild animals trained to jump on you for bananas, crocodiles bred in incubators and chameleons being yanked off branches for people to pet..

Great way to see lemurs up close - too up close for some tastes. The lemurs are so tame they can be a little aggressive so stand back and make it clear to the guides if you don't want lemurs jumping on you. Great way...More

Vakona Lodge Private Reserve - mixed feelings about this rather surreal place which we had no knowledge of before we attended. Large hotel complex (equine, squash, swimming pool, spa, etc) with attached private 'reserve' (reason we visited) consisting of a small island with numerous species...More

The cheeky lemurs are really active around guests. Jumping on shoulders and arms. There is a dancing lemur on the island that is amazing to watch. I recommend using slow motion recording of this fellow to see the strength and length of this variety of...More

Here lemurs are leaving on small islands separated by river. First one give a good option to see Brown lemurs, Black&White lemurs and Golden Sifaka lemurs. They are ready to jump on you and pose for photos once you have bananas in your hand. By...More

Really enjoyed our visit to lemur island and was the closest you are likely to get to them. The zoo has a fossa which is worthwhile to see. Clean and animals well cared for.
