Unique

This church which is also referred to as the Holy Cross Church stands out for it’s external decoration and the gardens that surround it. Mainly remarkable is it’s facade that mixes Christian religious motifs and Rapa Nui elements. It has several unique carvings inside which are worth viewing. Certainly would very highly recommend visiting this unique church to any traveler in Easter Island.

Church of the Holy Cross
Jan 2020
The name of this church is Church of the Holy Cross. It is a Catholic church that has been on this site for almost 100 years and until recently was the only church on the island. Catholic Mass is celebrated here on Saturday evening and twice on Sunday morning. The church is free and always open during the day so you can have a look anytime. The mixture of Christian and Rapa Nui symbolism is noted on the exterior as well as the interior. Inside , some of the wood carvings are very intricate. See photos posted.

We made a quick stop between masses on a Sunday...nice slice of life on the island. The Virgin & infant carved of wood at one of the side altars is very nice and traditional to the Island.

Beautiful mix of Catholic and Rapa Nui symbolism!

I stepped by the Church before goinf to the Craft Mall which is right at its side. The exterior is full of symbolism and beauty, and I really missed going to a mass there, although I'm not religious. Pay attention to the symbols of Catholic Church and Rapa Nui culture mixed outside, and to the beautiful carvings of Saint María of Rapa Nui, Saint Michael and Saint Franciscus inside. The baptismal font also has Rongo Rongo scriptures.

Great carvings and stained glass.
Beautiful high wooden ceiling.
When I went the front entrance was locked so I had to go around the left side entrance.
Very peaceful.

Holy Cross Catholic Church of Rapa Nui
Jun 2019
This is a unique and beautiful church and the only Catholic church on the island. The statues are in the style of the island carvers and should be seen! The church is a quiet place with a long history.

The church is reflective of the polynesian beauty of the island. The songs were polynesian chants and it was truly a spiritual experience-

Beautiful Old Local Church

The church in Rapa Nui is the only church on the island. built in 1949 it still hold Catholic Services on Sunday. There are plans of building a new church in the near future. You can go in and look around and it was very interesting with the mixture of catholic artwork and Rapa Nui artwork

Great Example of Catholic Polynesian Architecture

The Catholic church sits right in the middle of Rapa Nui, near the Artisans Market. Worth a visit to see the stonework and wood carving in the interior.
