Hidden Gem. A Four-Hand Moai Statue
Jan 2020
This statue is a hidden gem away from the other statues dotting the island. We came to this nondescript location as a part of our cruise ship shore excursion. It is located on private property and is unique to all other Moai on the island.

BOTTOM LINE: What makes this the most unusual Moai stature on Easter Island is that it has four hands. It was used anciently was a way to determine winter & summer solstices. This is a pretty cool location for snapping photos and selfies. According to our guide there used to be other statues here at one time. MY RATING: 8/10.

A Solo Moai in the middle of the island
Mar 2019 • Solo
This ahu and moai were restored back in the 1950s(?) and are unique in that the moai has four hands carved below its belly. Local lore is that the extra hands were added during restoration before the crew realized that the originals were still in situ.

Ahu Huri a Urenga is a must see
Feb 2019 • Couples
A must visit is the Ahu Huri a Urenga in the Rapa Nui National Park. There is a US$80 per person fee to enter the park for ten days with a ONCE only visit to most of the Moai. If one rents a car, a rental car is much cheaper than the VERY expensive tours and one can drive around the entire island and see ALL the Moai's..

SOME DEEPER MEANING OR A MISTAKE?
Nov 2018 • Friends
There is much speculation as to why this moai has two sets of hands, from a religious dimension, a change in height re the original moai to just a plain mistake. The ahu is 13m x 4m. It was restored in 1976 by the American William Mulloy. In additon to being aligned with two maunga and two other ahu, it was also a solar observatory, looking exactly where the sun rises during the austral winter solstice on June 21st. This moai is open to the public even though it is on private property.

4 handed Moai aligned to the winter solstice
Apr 2016 • Family
Ahu Huri A Urenga is a solitary moai with 4 hands (the significance of which is lost today). Ahu Huri A Urenga is built on a 20° angle to it's platform so that on the winter solstice the moai is precisely aligned to face the sunrise, so that the people knew daylight would increase after that happened. Located in the same area as Puna Pau, It is hard to find so I had to stop the car and ask a local for help. The hands are hard to see from where you are allowed to view it, bring some binoculars.

Original and fascinating
Nov 2016 • Solo
This solitary Moai is a real hidden gem, there are no indications to find it, nor it's possible to spot it from far unless you really pay attention. But any statue is banal on Easter Island, this one even less, it's so worth it the visit! Its position in the island interior is strategically: it looks in the direction where the sun rises during the winter solstice and probably it was used as a solar observatory. Now it's in a quiet place in the countryside, you probably will be there alone and you can take all your time to observe this particular statue. Besides its astronomical importance, it's the only Moai with 4 hands, such a mysterious feature! You can clearly see them, the lower part of its body is in quite good conditions. Personally I found it original and fascinating, another piece of art of the magical Rapa Nui!

Special Meaning for this Moai
Jul 2016 • Family
In the middle of the island, quite away from all the coastal ones, the thing that is special about this moai is that astronomically it lines up with the spring equinox for the southern hemisphere,
Still used by islanders as a Important spriritual location. From what was shared with us
You can get very close (respectfully so), walk around it, and see details up close. (4 hands) and tattos on the back
The terrain ight in front of it, was cleared for a ceremony just the week before our arrival, so it was very need, and showed remains of commuity cooking firebowl
If you have time, this is worth the visit.

Solitary moai
Sep 2016 • Couples
This moai seems a little out of place, standing alone, near the edge of town. Although out of all of the upright moai on the island, you can get the closet to this one. He doesn't have the grandure of some of the other locations but its serene and quiet and a chance to get up close to one

Incredible
Jul 2016 • Friends
Ahu Huri a Urenga is slightly off the common tourist paths, which is a shame as it is fascinating – the only known moai with four hands! Though other reviewers have complained of erosion, this is really not the case and three of the four hands are fully visible. Absolutely worth a visit to stop and wonder what the inspiration was behind this unique moai. Highly recommended.
