There are so many places to visit in Iceland and all so lost in the wilderness that we came across this one by luck and it was such a good thing to find because we experienced something that was truly still in-contaminated or just brand...More
After a week of hot spring hunting we felt this was our favourite outdoor, free and natural hot spring. The hike to get there is nice. The water is both hot and clean. As it is a running river with new clean water coming in...More
The hike in took us right around an hour, and we weren't stopping much at all. It is uphill. It IS worth the HIKE. We wore our suits under our hiking clothes. After we were done, we had to wait to get behind one of...More
This place is magical. I loved every minute of our time there and would highly recommend a visit. The water temperature is perfect and the surroundings are gorgeous. A few words of warning though. The 45 minute hike out to the bathing area is uphill....More
This is a can't miss attraction if you're in the Hveragerdi area. The hike out to the river is mostly uphill and steepest at the beginning, but eventually levels out; there are some beautiful scenic vistas of the valley, town and ocean along the way....More
Are we there yet may constantly echo through your head (or ears with small children) as you hike towards the river. It is uphill for most of the three-kilometer trail. However, the trial is maintained nicely and the parking lot has free bathrooms. I went...More
We wanted to avoid the group bath blue lagoon and this was a magnificent alternative. We went in the a.m. after a local bakery coffee and croissant trip. A one hour hike and only a few other bathers in the river. Nice hike with great...More
The hike in is 90% uphill for 2.3 miles; it’s a workout. But well worth it! You will see hot muddy springs and hot clear springs along the hike. And sheep too! And the great plus is the Hot River is free. Because you are...More

I just hiked to the Hot River in Hverigerdi the evening of July 10 at about 8:30pm. We hiked out at 11:00pm and people were still hiking in! Relaxing in the river was a great way to spend the evening! And it was not very busy; maybe only 20 other people there! It’s definitely a hike to get there! It’s 90% uphill and 2.3 miles each way, but the trail is well paved. And the trail is gorgeous with natural hot springs dotting the path. I suggest bringing water shoes to wear in the river. The stones are 1”- 2” in diameter and hurt like h___ to walk on. My husbands watch measured the water temp at 96F. But you can go further upstream for warmer water, and downstream for cooler water. And it’s all free!
