Neighbourhood: Recoleta
Characterised by the French-style mansions which are the legacy of its aristocratic past, Recoleta is the true “Paris of the South.” Walking around this neighbourhood is an experience like no other in Buenos Aires: its streets are lined with elegant apartment buildings, exclusive boutiques, and former mansions turned into high-end hotels and embassies, which exude an alluring air of sophistication and class. You'll also find a rich cultural scene centred on the National Museum of Fine Arts, the National Library, and the Recoleta Cultural Center; as well as some great shopping spots, like the Buenos Aires Design Mall with an artists' fair set up in Plaza Francia every weekend.

For a small museum, we spent a lot of time here. Partly it was the interesting art, architecture, and ambiance, with appropriate classical music playing in the background. And, partly it was the staff, including a long chat with the curator, who spoke perfect English, about all things Solar, Argentine art, and Buenos Aires. Highly recommended.

The building is certainly unique, and if you like modern art the Xul Solar will certainly delight. It's not the biggest building or collection, so don't go in expecting a blockbuster. I did enjoy my visit and the Xul's zany, mystical, colourful artworks. A nice treat is the small gift shop. A decent variety of reproductions, pins, cards, etc at surprisingly reasonable prices- nifty souvenirs and treats for the folks back home.

Interesting , if small, collection from an artist way ahead of his time. Shoot for the free guided tour [Spanish only] to get a better understanding of what he was all about. Interesting building as well.

This was an artist I had not heard of before. His artwork is 'fantastical'. What an interesting mind he must have had. His artwork is other world creative. I look forward to reading the book I grabbed. Worth a visit.

A most intriguing and imaginative artist. Xul Solar worked on tempera and ink to create naïve, dreamlike landscapes, he created a new language, etc.

The museum displays works of art, mostly paintings, by Xul Solar. He has very interesting art, many expressionist/surrealist paintings that used many symbols. Very colorful, lots of serpents, astrological symbolism, and religious iconic figures. Museum is located in his old home, nice and small so doable fairly quickly which is my kind of museum- focused, interesting and visually stimulating. Worth finding.

I found this museum on Atlas Obscura and couldn't wait to see it. Absolutely worth the search and walk over. I loved it here and the twisted frames of reality and alternative universes really got my heart pounding. A small space, one and half floors of exhibit, but a must-not-miss when in town. I look forward to purchasing a few prints to hang at home! Enjoy!!

I'll start by admitting that I'm a fan of small museums. I'd rather go to The Frick in NYC than the Met. So that should put this review into context. I knew nothing about Xul Solar in advance, except that he was considered an Argentine treasure and was a friend of Borges. I loved this museum. There is not a lot of explanation about Solar's work, but if you start where you are instructed and work your way up through the museum, you really understand the progression of Solar's work, his increasing study of the stars, mysticism, Zodiac, colors, and his created language. Or, you can look him up on Wikipedia in advance. I loved the ability to better understand an artist I didn't know previously. We were the only two people in the museum the entire time. Really terrific. Another review mentioned not visiting and "saving the 60 peso entrance fee." Pshaw. First, that's like $4 with the current exchange rate (museums in the US are now typically at least a $20 entrance fee), and even if you hate the art, it's $4 for a respite from the city for a while. Plan on spending about an hour here.

We didn't know Xul Solar prior to arriving in Argentina, but we were entranced. His watercolors in vibrant palettes with playful and symbolic figures are delightful and refreshing.

The artist was intrigued by astrology and the esoteric, so potential visitors who are interested in related themes should definitely come here.

Solar was a great friend of Borges, who lauded his creativity and output. Visitors who can read Spanish should plan for more time here to read through the selection of collected writings about him, which are illuminating.

This is not a typical casa/museo in that there is no sense of living space, but it is a fine place to view his work exhibited.

This was the highlight of Buenos Aires for us.
