The Village Museum is well worth a visit if you are in Stellenbosch. The museum preserves articles of local historical interest. There is a small entrance fee which gives access to four buildings close to the museum. The houses were built between 1709 and 1850. Each has furniture of the period and is tended by a lady dressed in period costume. They give you a brief overview of the property and answer questions.

This museum shows buildings in and outside of the Dutch colonial period. It shows how colonialists lived at that time. In several of the houses is a guide, who gives short explanations in English or Afrikaans. I was really impressed by this museum.

The 4 houses are closely situated making it an easy walk. They provide a quick overview of life in Stellenbosch, stretching from the 1600's through to the Victorian era. Took us about 1.5 hours to see all 4. The lady guides, dressed in period costume were informative and welcoming. The addition of stories of the slave-trade provided a sobering balance to the South African/British story. It is a disturbing, but critical reminder of the violence and injustice that built our society. Definitely worth a visit.

Four period houses provided a glimpse into life in 18th and 19th centuries. Well preserved and well presented.

Interesting guide to the history and domestic life of Stellenbosch over the 18th and 19th centuries, illustrated through the restoration of four period houses and a gunpowder magazine. There are very helpful and friendly guides in each of the sites within the museum complex. The lobby area has a series of detailed information boards.

Once in Stellenbosch is good to make also this tour and learn something from the early days on top of the usual wine tastings in the region. Price is very OK and the ladies to explain the 4 old buildings are very professional

Definitely worth visiting the 4 period houses situated close together. Guides give tourists a detailed description of the house and its history but you are free to move through the rooms at your leaisure. Nice way to spend and hour. Take small denomination notes for guide tips at each house, 10 rand per guide is more than enough.

An interesting collection of 4 buildings that trace the history of Stellenbosch since white settlers arrived in the area. Each property has a guide that explains the background to the building. A single ticket (80 rand) covers all 4 properties. An interesting way to discover how the town developed prior to the tourist invasion!

Includes 3 lovingly restores, refurbished homes of 3 different colonial Dutch families. Each home is staffed by an "in character" woman who provides background and answers any questions. As a History lover, I really enjoyed this time capsue experience as I have a very high regard for what these settlers did for South Africa. A highly recommended hour or so whilst visiting the winelands.
