It was so interesting to visit the home of CJ Lagenhoven, stepping back in time. Each room is perfectly arranged and our guide gave us some interesting information on every room. I would definitely recommend the Arbeidsgenot to anyone visiting Oudtshoorn.

If you are in Oudtshoorn and you are interested in South-African history, then this little museum gives you a highlight. The museum is housed in the home Langenhoven lived in. He was the author of "Die Stem", the South-African Hymne during Apartheid. He was a teacher, writer, politician, cabinet maker and last but not least he was a witty man. All to be seen in this museum. You'll get a guide. Small groups.

We took our two teenagers and they were very intrigued. It was awesome to see the house and my husband loved Langenhoven's woodwork room.

Arbeidsgenot - True to it name, the house and garden tells the story of the life the Langenhoven's lived with joy. The garden and house are meticulously well maintained and it was heartwarming to see heritage being kept up so well.

Took my kids here as this a part of our history that is not told to our kids at school anymore. Was very heartwarming to see that this is being kept neat and presentable even without government support.

Despite the town being very busy preparing for the KKNK music festival, we had the most wonderful tour by an informed, enthusiastic and very knowledgeable guide. The house is a great window into how life was like and some of the driving forces behind the importance of Afrikaans becomming an official language in South Africa. We can all learn from the struggles of people who have gone before us in wanting their heritage and culture to be recognised. CJ Lagenhoven has so many stories to tell beyond those he wrote down.

I'd intended visiting the museum without realising our hotel was right next door! It's a mere R20 entrance fee and there's on site parking. Normal opening hours are mon-fri with an hour break 1-2pm (weekends on request).

The office is at the rear of the property and the curator on duty the Friday I visited was a really nice chap who took me on a guided tour of the house and grounds. Fortunately I'm able to converse a little in Afrikaans from my schooldays in SA so it made everything a bit easier but he's happy to explain in English so not a problem. The house was bequeathed to the nation on the basis all contents remained and this makes it interesting to see the artefacts and rooms more or less left as they were. The personal stories about the family are what brought everything to life for me and I left richer in knowledge.

I'm surprised more people don't visit as C J Langenhoven was a father of Afrikaans and author of the original national anthem (Die Stem van Suid Afrika). His grave has been moved to the grounds and for history's sake it would have been perhaps better to have the old SA flag flying near the grave rather than the new - but that's progress (maybe).

You will be warmly welcomed and I recommend an hour of your time visiting this interesting time capsule.

So nice to go back into the past of Oudtshoorn. Arbeidsgenot kept the history locked up. A must vissit. Nice to learn about the history of Oudtshoorn and Langenhoven who wrote DieStem. He was a carater of his own. Dont miss this place.
