Interesting building and information. We started with a guide but we wanted to read everything so left the guide after about 15 minutes ( she was very good). There is a small cafe within the building too.

So much more could have been done in and with this town museum. There is nothing unique and much is borrowed from elsewhere like the "titanic" room. Where is the local interest ?

Quaint and small with different themed rooms such as the elephant room and maritime room which was particularly interesting. The exhibits have lovely detailed inscriptions which are both informative and interesting. The museum is free to the public but be aware of the closing times before you visit.

We chanced upon this interesting little museum which is much more than a former gaol. It contained a lot of interesting facts about the Thesen family, one of the founding fathers of Knysna, and there is a whole section devoted to the Knysna forest elephants. Another section describes the discovery of the Coelacanth, a fish that has been living since the dinosaur era. There is also an art gallery although the display was not to our taste. Amazingly for this area this museum does not charge an entry fee - well worth a visit.

Small museum, worth a look, interesting maritime history and community cafe. Why will the municipality not accept small donations? I wanted to give a contribution to help maintain the exhibits, which need care and attention, but the friendly lady on duty told me this is prohibited. A pity, as a small locked box could help the cause.

The Old Gaol is right in the center of town, on the N2. For years it was used to house miscreants and the current display is of a 'typical jail cell'; however, the narratives focussed on a series of gangs (?) labeled the 27's, 28's and 26's for their founders and number of members. Each one had elaborate rules and it wasn't at all clear why this was so important in jail life. Although we were there on a weekday, the art gallery was closed.

There are not many museums & historical buildings really along the Garden Route. Do stop off at this - literally round the corner from the main N2 road,
It is a great use of the old Gaol buildings with small intimate displays about the history of Knysna's settlement & discovery, the Knysna elephants, angling, a prehistoric fish find & local art displays. There is also a lovely community type café.

We learnt about the museum due to the expo that was run while we were in Knysna. It was a good little discovery that isn't readily promoted. There was nobody in attendance during our visit but there's enough information written on the walls to gain some valuable insights about the artefacts, the building and Knysna.

There's a lot of art as well as art classes and a little cafe.

I would recommend this place to everybody! Everybody was friendly and went out of their way for us! The only problem i have is that there is too little of the original history of the building. They should upgrade more of the cells etc. This is just my opinion but like i said it really is a nice place!
