About
At the studio & gallery at 66 Main Street you can hear the stories behind my paintings and get a glimpse of my own life and work as an African artist. Visiting me is of course free but as an accredited Tour Guide I also offer township tours: Expect a fascinating experience of African culture, food, lifestyle and empowerment far beyond the usual Garden Route "routine". Optional: visit local artists.

We found Peggy's leaflet at our B&B in Knysna and it sounded interesting so we booked a Township Tour for the following day. It started on time and we were driven straight to the edge of the Township. Our guide was one of Peggy's team and was a delight. She seemed to know everyone! We stopped many times and our guide explained how the Township had developed and how it was still changing. We were welcomed into one of the local shops, met a lady who welcomed us into her Mandela home, the modern replacements of the apartheid era huts, with minimum basic standards. We spent a long time at a school, something as a retired teacher from the UK I was keen to do. The classes were large, but the children had a yearning to learn which gave us a positive feeling about the future for this generation. It was a treat for us when they sang some lovely traditional songs. Peggy's company supports a number of community activities and this year part of each tour fee is supporting a soup kitchen for children after school, and to provide some basic requirements for a pre-school crèche. Visiting this was an especially moving experience. This is our first visit to SA and this visit has been one of our most memorable.

We visited Peggys studio and were instantly smitten in by the artists cheerful nature, her passion for her work and her sense of humor. She told us the story behind every painting we were interested in: what meaning each color had in African culture, why she painted it the way she did and what the symbols and persons, plants, animals in the painting stood for. In that way she really ¨opened up¨ the paintings for us and at the same time we learned something about her as an artist and her own story of empowerment. This was a refreshing change from the sales pitches and ¨looking is free!¨ calls of the street vendors selling art in Cape Town. Even though to my (untrained) eyes much of the work of traditional African artists looks similar throughout the Garden Route (at least some motifs), our experience with Peggy made the paintings we bought very personal and unique gifts for ourselves. We noticed that Peggys artistic range also covers abstract paintings and other non-traditional styles. To me it also made a big difference to know that she is supporting the community. She works with kids and women in the townships who are in need, teaches them her skills and encourages others to follow her example by following their own passion. The visit was a highlight of our stay in Knysna. Highly recommended if you like art, as Peggy is also well connected with other artists and painters in the area. If we had had the time we would have definitely booked her township tour, too. Thanks Peggy :)

Peggy is a very warm hearted, well connected woman, who build a business and moved out of the township herself. As she put it: "there's no magic". Connected to how life in the township is, we were very impressed by her hard work as an artist and a tour guide. The day we had our tour there was a photo of her and the minister of tourism in the newspaper and she was rightfully proud.
For the tour we were picked up by her and drove directly to the township.
Peggy actively told us a lot about the townships and we could ask questions.
I wanted to know how life in a township is, but at the same time it hard to bear.
In the incredible rich Knysna of 76 000 inhabitants, 47 000 live in townships, in small shags, lots of them without running water and little electricity. The living conditions are extremely bad and crowded. In a small shag easily 10 people live, I could hardly image, that there is enough room in the floor. Peggy pointed out, that 80% are unemployed and without government support to buy food or anything.
The other 20% often work for minimum wage jobs, which is around 6€/day.
We visited a place, where Peggy sponsors food for school children and a creche, which she supports to get governmental approval. Another review did not like the invitation to help this places and labeled it a "sale pitch". I did not perceive it that way, they talked fondly about the past donation but did not actively ask for new ones, though this moments were hard for me too, seeing that with little money so much could be done. I am happy that Peggy bundles efforts and supports them.

We did a walking tour & visited a school along with a preschool in the Knysna township. Peggy has a very warm friendly personality but it seemed very obvious a sales pitch for money for the township was her purpose. She also pushed her store where African items could be purchased which seemed overpriced based on our previous stops at shops.

Peggy was very accommodating and such a lovely lady. We saw the reviews on Trip Advisor and thought we would book up the tour as we wanted to see the real Africa and a township. Peggy knows everyone on the township and is very well known in the community. We recommend taking lots of sweets for the kids as they seem to sense them and come running from all directions and we ran out within 5 minutes. The tour was really interesting and opened our eyes to the townships. At all times we felt totally safe with Peggy. We went to her studio after and saw the incredible art that she produces.

You'll fall in love with Peggy from the moment you meet her. She's so exuberant in her art and what she does in her community. Peggy just recently won the Entrepreneur of the Year Award in Kynsna and she definitely deserves it. I wish we could have spent more time with Peggy but that will have to wait until we can visit next time.

It was a short visit, far too short, to the Gallery, I will do the tour in July on my return to Knysna.
Wow, what vibrant colours, what a variety. The paintings reflect an ideal of Africa, a simple Africa, a strong and vigorous Africa, a loving Africa.
In the back corner I was gobsmacked. Piles of tinned food, packets of flour, rice and maize meal? Peggy's support a soup kitchen, a creche. WOW, this lady and her team really share the love!!!
I cannot recommend a visit to this gallery highly enough.

Peggy's is an amazing person, warm, caring and funny. She has worked tirelessly in her community to raise up the people who live in these townships. She gives you a chance to see how they live, and one thing you will notice is that even though they do not have much, and life is a daily struggle, they always have a smile for visitors. It is a great experience.
