About
The Book Collector is an antiquarian bookstore in the cultural heart of the seaside village of Hermanus from where it sells and ships literary treasures to book lovers and collectors across the world. The store prides itself on its collection of Africana and Militaria. Works on South Africa’s political and cultural history – in both English and Afrikaans – are popular choices for locals and tourists alike. Apart from the Literary Classics, the store’s shelves are piled ceiling-high with works on History, Politics, Travel and Exploration, Archeology, Mythology, Religion, Esoterica, Self-Help, Psychology, Philosophy, Biographies, Business, Science, Wild Life, Gardening, Cooking, Music, Art, as well as Arts and Crafts, and even Pets. It also has some hard-to-find Car and Motorcycle Manuals. This quaint little book shop also has a fine selection of First Editions and Signed copies. Popular fiction can be found on the Daily Sale Table. Come and Explore!

A shop not to miss
Oct 2018
A wonderfully stocked book shop with all manner of publications. You can get lost for hours just browsing through the shelves.

A ramble through time
Mar 2018 • Couples
A visit to The Book Collector is like a ramble through time and old treasures. It’s the kind of place you imagine your own library might have looked like if only you’d taken the time. You pick up books and smell them, you don’t just open them, you turn them over in case something unexpected drops out. (I believe that happens occasionally.) There are writers from the past, books you didn’t expect to find. These are books from other people’s lives, you feel you’re looking into what moved their readers then, and it moves you now. There’s something for everyone here, from the popular to the arcane, and if you want something, they’ll either have it or they’ll find it for you. Chris and Benade are simply ... book lovers. You feel it as you walk in the door. If you love books, this is the place to lose yourself for an hour.

Stunning Bookshop. Quirky decor

Amazing place. For book lovers only. Should be kept a secret. It looks a bit like an Aladdins Cave. My favourite bookshop.

A refutation of time and space.

It's not the great layout or the range of books or the size of the shop that impresses one, it's the approach of the owners to life. I'm talking two of the world's best writers in one space. Go and try it and you'll see for yourself.

Best kept secret in Hermanus.
Jan 2018 • Solo
Tucked away just off Main street Hermanus, there lies a gem of a book shop. Here, not only will you find a wide selection of collectible books, many signed by the authors, you will also find a dedicated team of attentive subject matter experts in the form of co-owners, Benade Kruger and intrepid former journalist, Chris Barlow-Steyn. Just don't expect a quick visit.

No ordinary book store
Sep 2017 • Family
The owners go out of their way to ensure that everyone feels welcome and cared for.
They have an excellent selection of books and art ranging from old to new, and extremely rare; I know they make a point of sourcing rare Afrikana as well. The new shop is beautifully outfitted and the Great Wall is something fantastic to behold.

Definitely one of my favourites

Thanks Gandre! Please pop in again. We'll order some coffee and debate the literary merits of 'Salmon Fishing in the Yemen' vs '20 000 Leagues Under the Sea' :)
