A very special experience. The scenery in the mountains is magnificent, and the ride through the many cuttings and tunnels makes it very memorable.
One serious lack though, is seating at the picnic site.
Rotting cable drums cut in half could surely be replaced with decent, cheap benches.
This is such a poor example of unexpected neglect that will not leave a good impression- especially on overseas visitors.
The track is in very poor condition, and will only get worse unless a company like Plasser Rail can be brought to restore it.

We had a lovely trip on the Power Van. The commentary was so informative and the views spectacular. Travels through 6 tunnels. Amazing views of mountain passes and beautiful flowers. Plenty of time at the picnic stop. On top of all that, the trip effectively gives you free entry to the Outeniqua Transport Museum. This trip is really excellent value and I would highly recommend it.

We went on the Power Van as a family, and it was a fabulous experience from start to end. The museum with the beautiful old trains was really a throw back, filling us all with nostalgia. The Power Van is neat en comfortable and service is very friendly. It was quite an educational journey! The views, however, was obviously the best part of the experience. A picture cannot justify the beauty that we were surrounded with. Make sure to pack a picnic basket - this is something you MUST do when visiting the Garden Route!

Views of George, Voortrekker tracks, old gravel passes and new tarred roads unbelievable. Mossel Bay and Hartenbos clearly visible from the tracks
The narrator / tour guide was very knowledgeable about local vegetation, tunnels, bridges, route, George and the local environment. Communicated freely with passengers.
Worth every cent, will do it again.

Oh my word, what an awesome experience!!! Felt as if we stepped back in time. Looking out of the window, listening to the train's wheels screaming on the trails, it felt as an old time fairy wonderland unfolded as we were travelling through a forest, tunnels and waterfalls. I was carried away into my own yesterday dream world, I could imagine looking down and seeing myself dressed in those beautiful old gowns, with a hat and feather on my head. We had a lovely picnic high up in the mountain. What a wonderful memory!!

A lovely excursion to do in George. You get to visit the Outeniqua Transport Museum as well. Unfortunately the day we went with the power van up, the mist decided to come up with us 😔 we didn't get to see the magnificent views from there but the van through the tunnels etc was magical

Very interesting and informative humble rattle up the breathtaking mountain side. You also go through 6 tunnels, one of which is more than 200 m long.
Great value for money.
Very glad I took some frozen water sachets with me in my picnic bag. I definitely recommend this in summer.
Get ready for a real adventure, a feast for the eyes and soul and a lovely day out!
The Locomotive Museum at the Station is a must see too!
There are clean public toilets on site.
Do bring a donation for the museum please, it is well worth it.

What a joyful way spending a Saturday morning. Very informative and the scenery is breath taking! Make sure a pack a picnic basket as the train stop halfway on the journey. Make time to have a look around the museum as it is truly a trip down memory lane! Highly recommended! Book in advance and if possible a clear day is preferably to enjoy the views.

We were at the transport museum and decided to take the OPV to Groot Brak River. Now I understand that it is nowhere close to as nice as the "normal" route into the mountains, but it is still pleasurable and fun. The staff on the power van was friendly and informative.
Overall the OPV was a quirky yet fun experience.

What a fgreat way to spend a few hours in George.
Using the old railway line built on the slopes of the mountain.
Amazing views, amazing experience.
Definitely a must do.
Don't forget your picnic basket as the train stops at a picnic spot with view...

Hi Thank you. Apparantly they are working on the old track so the 45 mins I guess is a short route. Was the experience nice though, did you see much scenery on the way? Where did the train stop please? Sarah

I just need to know if that cell number is the only way of booking .and how far in advance do you need to book as of course if it runs 6 days a week which one does it not run.
Written 16 February 2018
You can call them on 27 44 801 8239
We booked about a week in advance as some days they don’t run due to limited demand. If memory serves, they don’t run on Sundays.
Note: if you are facing the powervan the front will be on the right. It reverses down the track and then goes up
