The "Big White Church" is a bit of a landmark in George. It stands majestic on one of the main arteries in town and at the top of one of the main cbd streets.
It is still used actively by the community of George and has a couple of lovely markets during the year - a meat market in August / September and the loveliest Christmas Market in December.
It is well worth a visit. The church grounds are open during the day.

This very lovely church is a landmark of the city of George, where it is both imposing & beautiful. We only walked around the grounds & the outside of the church but it is set in a beautiful setting with the mountains behind it. It is within walking distance of several hotels so it is worth a stroll around to take in the atmosphere of the town.

This is a beautiful old church and well worth the visit. It was originally built in the form of a cross. The acoustics are great so it is a great venue for a singing group to perform. Well worth a visit if yu are interested in old churches.

The perfect place to shop for Christmas presents and thanks to some gorgeous young ladies serving the food and working in the kitchen it is also the best place to take my teenag son. Well he socialised with the friendly, young ladies, I was able to take my time to look at all the items for sale. After my shopping we could have lunch at the church. Within a few days, my son had headed to the church on an almost daily basis to eat the homemade well priced pancakes. The homemade pies and salad is also to be recommended. While the rest of George battled to find a quiet spot to eat, we had our hidden treasure.

The woodwork in this church is beautiful. The pulpit with its canopy and intricate woodwork is loose standing and has stairs for the preacher to enter.

Beautiful, different from the conventional. A real landmark of the city of George, central, within walking distance of several hotels, guesthouses and restaurants.

What a majestic and beautiful piece of architecture against the backdrop of mountains or sky. A little bit of history: The cornerstone of this magnificent Mother Church was laid in 1832. The foundations were 6 foot deep and five foot wide to carry the 3 foot thick walls. Building materials were brought by the wagon-loads full - 180 loads! The yellowwood and stinkwood used came from the local forests, Plettenberg Bay and Knysna. The original roof was made from reeds which originated from Riversdale. With rain blown through the open windows onto the woodwork, it weakened and the steeple collapsed in 1905. It was rebuilt by 1906. The bell was bought when the building was reconstructed. Beautiful to see. Awesome to be inside.
