I bid a fond farewell after 30 years of visiting
I first visited Buitenverwachting in 1993 and have been coming regularly until my last visit in October 2014. I eagerly anticipated a return 30 years on since my first visit. Understandably the place has changed considerably over the years but I was sad not to see the huge visitors book which I signed on every previous visit. The new decor and layout maximises the view and is modern and stylish. However, for me it lacked the grace and intimacy of the old arrangement. You were much more conscious of other tables around you and the hard surfaces made acoustics sharper, whereas the old arrangement you felt you were in a private oasis with tables around by not close or intruding. The food is very good, but unlike tasting menus of old there was not that knock out dish that transported you to another level. Also gone were some of the old touches, such as the palate cleansing sorbets between fish and meat courses, and meat and desert. Similarly the petit fours at the end were not homemade. The service was as always exceptional. Staff were knowledgable and helpful and never tried to oversell, in fact a couple of times they advised slight less expensive choices from the wine menu taking account of what we were looking for. It was our best meal this visit in South Africa so far but not the transporting experience of old, as such I don’t think I will return, unless they can find the old visitors book!! Instead I will savour the many happy memories of my visits here of the last 3 decades.

We discovered Buitenverwachting while exploring neighbouring estates. Tranquil setting, good deli and airy restaurant, beautiful lawns for picnics and a relaxed, chic tasting area. Be aware...restaurant kitchen closes early. We arrived just after 3pm and were too late for ordering meals. Various platters available at the wine tasting area.

    Wine Tasting Experience 🍷
We had their wine tasting. 5 wines. We also order a cheese board and a sweet board. Their cheese board was great, those little breads were sooooo YUMMY 😋The sweet board was a let down. They were 2 vanilla cupcakes and 4 blocks of brownie, which I assume it was a brownie cut in 4 pieces. The wine farm is nice but the seating outside does not have the best views. The front of the building has better views. Beautiful lush lawns for little ones to explore.

Lovely wine farm, delicious wine but the reception we received was cold and the ladies working there were unnecessarily rude. Despite having a conversation over the phone; on arrival we were told they actually don’t accommodate groups. Me and a group of majority black friends had a racist experience.

It was my friend and I’s first time at Buitenverwachting. We were so excited to experience the farm and the wine tasting, but unfortunately the service was below par. Our server was completely disinterested and seemed miserable. Every wine was explained so bluntly and she seemed annoyed to be serving us. Ironically, she was a completely different person to the table of foreigners next to us. Disappointing experience, as we did enjoy the wines and the scenery.

2nd time here (for dinner) and so good to be back. We were a party of six.

Cuisine superb, wines exquisite. Delightful decor and a real ambiance to excite your taste buds!

Our engaging waiter Scholl (apologies if I've got the spelling wrong there) was great and was bang in tune with our humour level! He explained all the dishes wonderfully which made them all the more appetizing. He was always on hand if needed but allowed us space to enjoy our evening without interruption.

If you are a discerning foodie this place this is a must for you!

Several of the Constantia wineries are heaving with tourists in season, being so close to Cape Town. Not the case with Buitenverwachting when we arrived, although the name means "beyond expectation"; visiting after lockdown restrictions were eased, we were pleased to find a quiet and friendly atmosphere, very pleasant wine, and an all-round good experience. To go with the wine selection we ordered a cheeseboard plus smoked trout pate, which were excellent, and left with bottles of their Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer - although almost any of the wines on offer will please.

thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon here. We deliberately picked this vineyard because its one of the less touristy ones. we enjoyed the 5 wine tasting and paired it with a sharing plater. The lady that served us was lovely and friendly and knowedgable. The platter was fabulous and was perfect to allow us to enjoy the wine. The garden with a large tree in the center is beautiful and after our tasting we bought a bottle of wine and borowed a picnic blanket and spent a beautiful afternoon in the shade of the tree sipping wine and drinking in the beautful place that Buitenverwaching is.

We recently did a wine tasting at Buitenverwachting and ordered some platters to go with it. The lady serving us was VERY friendly. Unfortunately we got the impression that the wine tastings are no longer as good as they used to be, with less information on the wines. The platters are nice but not great and expensive. Adrienne, we miss you, your picnics and your food!

Every time my wife and I visit Cape Town it has become compulsory that we spend an afternoon at Buitenverwachting with one of their fantastic picnic baskets. The setting is gorgeous, the food in the baskets excellent and plentiful, the service is first class and the wine eminently quaffable. I would like to say a big thank you to the ladies who make this such an enjoyable experience and we will see you again during our next trip.

We got to the place and were made to wait. Other people who came after us were being served and attended to by the many white guys and lady to but not us. They looked at me when I spoke to them but turned their heads and then spoke to other white patrons like we never existed. After the waitress walked passed us and attended the table next to us we called here and still nothing. Eventually the lady assisted us but since we decided to do one tasting instead of two she insisted she pours two wines per visit to our table.
The wines are great but rather go purchase it at an outlet and enjoy it elsewhere where you don't have to be subject to racist and insolent behaviour.
It's a pity these individuals are allowed to tarnish the establishments name and reputation if any.
