Apart from the staff who were always pleasant and helpful, the weekend could only be described as pretty awful The game viewing was not great - the lions in particular! In fact on our second game drive several guest hoped that we wouldn't have to see the lions again! The food was to put it simply - was terrible! bland and unappetizing - the breakfast fruit was tasteless, the cheeses dry, and the desserts equally bad ! what I was assured was fresh cream was NOT - and everything else was obviously bulk catering quality instant mixes! In fact our group decided to leave before breakfast on our last day and preferred to stop en route. My accommodation was quite nice, - but no coffee, no bath plug and no complimentary bottle of wine as promised - these were remedied . The out door shower had obviously not been used OR cleaned for a good while , dusty filled with cobwebs leaves and dried thatch! One of the patio cushions had split. The only highlight was the young man who was in charge of the telescope and star gazing. His knowledge and sharing of it was amazing!

We booked a two night stay from 12-14 March at Aquila Private Game Reserve. We arrived at Aquila just after two. At the gate we were sanitized and our temperature were taken in line with Covid protocols. Lots of forms had to be filled in which is understandable. We were then told that the lunch is only until 3 so we went to the restaurant to have our lunch and the check in happened after that. Two of us has been to Aquila in 2015, but the standards has dropped dramatically, even though the prices went up. It is clear that they r highly overpriced for activities happening there. Paying R590 for a 30min, back, neck and head massage is ridiculous. It is clear that they r catering for the overseas market and not the locals. The spa was added since our last visit.. imagine paying R250 to use the pool, not sure if there is a time limit. The food was very unappetizing even though, breakfast, lunch and supper were included. We then checked into our rooms which had no view and was very claustrophobic. In the outline they said that there would be sanitizer in the room but there wasn’t any. Rooms were also not serviced, due to covid but no cleaning products were available in the rooms to clean the basin, shower and toilet, etc. We went on a afternoon game drive the next afternoon at 15:30. It was very windy and a bit uncomfortable. Even though we were sanitized, our temperature were not taken and theee were no social distancing on the trucks. The trucks were filled to capacity. It is also clear that the trucks needed some servicing as we hopped and bobbed all over the place. The animals seemed to be in a very bad state especially the lions. They looked sad and dreary. There r only one Elephant, a few springboks , rhino, hippo, eland, zebras, Buffaloes, ostriches and giraffe. They actually had less animals than 2015. We also went on a Sunday Morning game drive, but I feel that we just drove around the park aimlessly. Just to make up time. We want to support our local businesses, but not at the cost where u r being exploited. For them to keep the local market interested they need to start by making a trip to Aquila more affordable for all. When u pay for something it should be top notch. This was my last visit to Aquila Game Reserve as I don’t think that it was worth the money spent.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry that you felt we deserved negative feedback, and we would like to address your issues: We are not 'catering for the overseas market' - our incredible 50% off rates reflect that. Our treatment rates are in line with any 4-star safari venue. Our spa rates are R250 if guests have not booked a treatment, and are to make use of 3 pools, a sauna and steam room, and to spend limitless time in the spa enjoying the facilities - charged at a small rate as to keep it exclusive. Guests are welcome to free access if they have purchased a treatment, along the lines of all hotels and lodges. By your description, is reads as if you purchased the Standard Lodge Room deal at R4999 for the weekend for two people, all inclusive, which is very clearly described as having no view, with the room measurements and photos in on the online listing through which you booked. We have accommodation which is larger, with views and terraces but you chose to stay in a Standard Lodge Room. We include a 'must read' link to our Covid protocol, wherein, amongst other points, we say that rooms will not be serviced during your stay for safety reasons. We apologise for the lack of sanitiser, which would have been remedied immediately by management. Temperatures are taken upon your arrival and our protocol is to sanitise every guest on our game drive, ensure that they wear masks. These are the Covid protocols for game drives. We have hundreds of animals, which your ranger would have explained are not always all visible during 2 or 3 game drives. It sounds like you saw many animals, which must have been very exciting. Our animals are observed by our conservationists, rangers and anti-poaching unit at all times and your opinion of their 'sadness' is something we can't comment on. As for the wind - apologies that we can't control that. Best wishes, Team Aquila

We ventured to the Aquila game reserve for the day safari and were greeted with a welcome drink. The manager and staff were extremely helpful, the food was delicious and a pleasant surprise as we were not expecting it to be so healthy and fulfilling. The main event, Day safari was informative entertaining and it was so good to be out in nature with the animals

Absolutly little value for money, cocktails mot expensive (80-100 Rand) and little and cheap alcohol in, the back rooms with little windows on the passage are low class, food bad-avarage, service mhhh. Spa is 5* environment but theraspist 3* and very expensive (900 for 60 min), pool area nice, terraces with nice tables were not available any time of the day.
