As my friend and I were planning our two week trip to South Africa, we thought it would be fun to arrange a tour or two with a gay tour company. After thoroughly reviewing the other tour operators, it looked like Cape Town Gay Tours seemed to be the best (based on reviews from several sites and the quality of their website (although obviously that sometimes not the best indicator)). After deciding to go with Cape Town Gay Tours, we started considering all the various tours they offered, and ending up opting to sign up for quite a few of them (instead of trying to do them on our own). We signed up for: Township tour, City tour, Cape Peninsula (including the highly recommended Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens), Full day Safari Tour and the Winelands Tour. It was a big risk signing up for so much of our vacation with one tour company, but we were SO HAPPY we did! We thoroughly enjoyed every single tour we had with them. Richard (the owner) did a couple tours himself, and we had two other guides on his team as well. They were all a lot of fun and very knowledgeable. We did a couple of private tours and also had tours with a small group, and that turned out to be a great mix (try a couple of private tours so you can have complete freedom to go where you want, at the pace you want). When we did the group tours, we got lucky and had jovial, interesting and adventurous folks in our group, but a large part of what made it enjoyable were the guides. If you're going to Cape Town for the first time, you truly need to do all of the tours listed above, because they're all wonderful and so different, and give you well-rounded insight to what South Africa is all about. Richard and team really went above and beyond expectations to ensure we had a marvelous trip. You feel they're genuinely happy to have you there, and excited to show you their beautiful country. Definitely a five star operation (with an exclamation mark)!

I wish to acknowledge the wonderful service and help that a Richard extended to me and my friends in organising 2 ship tours from our recent visit to Capetown on the Sun Princess. Richard was like mine host in his very efficient manner and style in helping me organise 2 small ship excursions to Langa township with Mzu and the other, a day safari to Inverdoorn. Richard was most helpful per emails liaising with a group of 13 of us in the lead up to our arrival. He was most easy to plan and work with and anticipated our needs. Both our tours went like clock. Although Richard was not on safari with us, Gerhard and Greg ensured we travelled safely and enjoyed our day immensely. Inverdoorn was amazing made even more so by being a smaller park with less visitors and big buses. In addition, Richard was most generous with his pricing giving us group discounts for both our tours. It was a privilege to work and plan with Richard and would recommend him and his company very highly if you were to visit Capetown by cruise ship. Although I was the only gay man in the group, all the other members in my party felt very welcomed and included in the planning and in our tours due to Richard’s personal and interpersonal skills. We all left Capetown feeling the same way, that it was the highlight of our cruise. Thank you Richard for all you did for our group as a group and individually. We all acknowledge you as our Capetown host and adviser par excellence. Danny Byrne On behalf of our Sun Princess Cruise excursions February 2020

Danny, thank you so much for your very kind words. It was our absolute pleasure to guide you all when here, on multiple tours, and from other lovely emails I received from your fellow passengers after touring with us, it was just wonderful to see you all had the best time with us, in the short time you were docked in Cape Town. I am also pleased I got to meet you all, albeit briefly, on the early morning departure for your safari, and that both guide Mzu, Gerhard & Greg gave the best possible experience to you all. It is our goal to provide amazing trips for our clients, and as always, such a pleasure to hear we lived up to that. Keep well and we look forward to guiding you when you are back in Cape Town in the future, which I am sure you will be! Richard

If you read the same reviews I did, you already know that CTGT is awesome and makes a fantastic partner for a trip to Cape Town - whether you’re gay or not. We started our planning a few months out, reaching out to Richard via e-mail to find out what tours were available and to figure out how everything would work. He was fantastic over e-mail. Not only did he give us great options for tours to do, and how best to fill our time in Cape Town, he also answered a million questions about how to get around, places we should go off-tour, and helped to answer many of our more nervous questions about safety, locations, etc. About us: married Gay couple - have high standards across the board. Both of us are over educated and bossy enough to slap someone around when they’re not delivering what we want. Ultimately, we ended up booking CTGT for 3 of our 5 days in Cape Town, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. The first day, we toured downtown and Table Mountain. The second day, we did the Cape of Good Hope, “the penguins” and other spots on the loop. The third day, we toured wineries. Though it wasn’t the norm, we were fortunate to have two different tour guides - the awesome Johan for our first two days, and the king, Richard himself for the wine tours. Richard told us that normally we would have had the same person for 3 days, but Johan had another commitment that was completely understandable, so there was a swap. I’ll start with Richard first just because he’s the kind of guy I like to give a hard time to. For the wine tour, we went to three wineries and Richard informed us that these were lesser-visited wineries - meaning no massive motor coaches or hoards of people. Richard was a star at each of the wineries - hugs and kisses from the staff, happy cheer and a feel of old home week. One of the things that I loved is that Richard took us to wineries that he had a true passion for. How do I know he had passion for them? Not only did he have great inside information and knew them like the back of his hand - he bought wine at EVERY ONE OF THEM! - it’s an admirable quality and we had a fantastic time driving around with him. We had a no-holds-barred questioning session on the drive where we really picked his brain about the society and the way things work in South Africa and it was a fantastic conversation to learn from someone first hand where we didn’t have to be worried about offending them with our questions. Now - on to our boy Johan. What a pleasant guy, and he shows a true love for Cape Town and has an immense knowledge of the entire place. Johan is truly impressive with a fascinating background that gave us a truly unique view of our surroundings. He showed us hidden views, obscured cafes, gave us a true look at the area from a local’s perspective, including an in-depth lesson of the culture of the city and country and explanations of all of our awkward and/or inappropriate questions. We absolutely loved our time with Johan, and despite the bonus of Richard on day 3 - we would have loved to have spent the additional time with Johan as well. If you want to know about the logistics - here’s the info: For our setup, Johan or Richard drove us in a private Volvo on our journey. They had all their proverbial ducks in a row - a packet including prepaid tickets, their official tourism license (that seemed to allow them to skip some lines, get some discounts, and make us feel like royalty), and a solid plan of attack for our trip. They clearly had their stuff together and knew what they were doing. We pre-paid for everything well in advance though an online payment system using a credit card. Our fees included the private car (Driven responsibly and safely by our guides), tickets to anything we stopped at, and some new friends in South Africa. The fee didn’t include lunch each day, or any times we forced Johan to pull over for coffee. They knew where to stop for photos, how to get us around efficiently, and how to pace the day so we could get the most out of it without running late. We were picked up promptly on time and delivered back to our Airbnb on time. Really can’t say enough about how great CTGT was to work with and spend so much time with on this trip. We were a little concerned that spending 60% of our trip time with them might be too much. I’m not going to lie, our airbnb host commented that she hasn’t seen someone run as hard as we did during our trip, but I wouldn’t have done it any other way. We checked so many things off our lists in the 3 days that our last two days were were able to chill out a bit and pick up a few random things that we had either learned about during our time with the guides, or that were just on our list for other reasons. Richard was super helpful and really didn’t mind answering any of our questions when we were getting things setup - and that was BEFORE we booked or paid for anything. Gotta say - just a stellar experience across the board and worth every penny and every second…

My husband and I just returned from my first visit to Cape Town South Africa, and would not have had nearly the same wonderful experience without the help of Richard, Werner, and Cape Town Gay Tours. I found the company through a web search online, and am so glad I did. From my first interaction with Richard to our last (sad) goodbye to our guide Werner, we felt completely comfortable, well taken care of, and extremely satisfied. Richard helped us to put together a 3 day customized route that included all our "must-sees" and was incredibly responsive and helpful before, during, and after our time in Cape Town. He not only addressed our tour requests/needs, but freely offered help and suggestions with recommendations for restaurants, lodging, and other venues which were not on our scheduled itinerary, and answered many of our general pre-travel questions. I could not recommend the company highly enough for anyone wanting a personalized, highly enjoyable and educational experience in Cape Town, South Africa and the surrounding areas.

Molo! What a fun experience! I can't recall how we came across Cape Town Gay Tours as my partner did a lot of the planning for this trip. We wanted to explore Cape Town and as LGBT identifying individuals, we wanted to have a local who also identifies that way to show us around. We communicated with Richard, the owner, and our guide was Werner - he was such a hoot. He has a lot of personality which I appreciate as it got me excited about everything we were seeing. His positivity is contagious! He also is so well informed on so many things ranging from attractions, to the wild life, history, where to avoid other tourist prone areas and get better sights, etc. From our first greeting he got us these paper art hearts which are part of the Secret Love project going on Cape Town which focuses on spreading love. These paper hearts are given to homeless people to sell to people on the streets for money rather than asking for handouts. What a great concept and great start to our tours! We did 3 days of activities ranging from Boulder Beach in which my partner and Werner went swimming/snorkeling with the penguins. I preferred not to wade into the freezing cold water. From there we drove through Simon's Town, and Hout Bay where we went to this dope little artsy market that also had lots of cool food options. From there we went back to our hotel (the Taj - see glowing review on their page) to catch iMzu's township tour (see their page as well). Our second day we drove out to pet a cheetah at the Cheetah Outreach in Somserset West. After that Werner took us on a tour of Cape Town city center including the castle, feeding squirrels in the Company Gardens which is a past-time, the flower market, and Bo Kaap houses area. We grabbed lunch in the gay part of town and encountered inclement weather which prohibited us from going up the cable cars to Table Mountain. Not to fear though, as we rescheduled that part for another day. Extremely grateful to Werner for accommodating our reschedule. On the rescheduled day the cars were closed because of wind so instead we hiked a part of Table Mountain - a trail that was more flat - with amazing views. Werner frequently hikes these trails so it was great to have someone who knew were they were going. Midway through our hike, we saw the cable cars running. We checked the website and sure enough they were now opened! Man did we luck out. It was a such a nice day out and we quickly made our way down to the main area to catch one. We made it to the top and it was such an great view of the city and surrounding areas. I definitely recommend touring with Cape Town Gay Tours as it was such a Wern(d)erful experience. ;-)
