I visited the township of Masi as part of a two week volunteering program in the local day care centre so I had a small understanding about the township and the lay of the land, but I didn’t truly appreciate the scale and sense of community until I took the Township Tour with the lovely Mandy, and what an experience! Never having experienced anything like this it truly was an eye opener but brought such a sense of comfort and community from the love and life you see in all that live in Masi. Not only was Many full of knowledge and local contacts, we had the opportunity to visit many places within the township including the library and community centre, and we also were welcomed into a home for a traditional meal which certainly was a highlight! If I was to visit SA again, I would lock in a tour again as the township is ever changing and growing and I would love to visit again. Highly recommend and think about my time in Masi regularly!

The township sisters tour is the perfect of experience the township. So much info about the people, the place and how it started. Mandy was a blessing to have on the tour. She knows everybody and was such an inspiration to walk around with. Can’t recommend them enough. You have to try it, to truly understand it

Our tour of Masiphumelele was a real eye opener. From the outside, the township doesn’t look like much, but dig deeper and you are exposed to a close-knit community filled with families from a myriad of African countries; each bringing with them their own traditions. Our guide Mandy was fabulous, she lives in the Township and you can tell by her passion for the community that she has a sense of pride about her home. She was happy to answer any questions we threw at her and we left with a wealth of knowledge about the lives of the people living in the township. We visited the local library, community centre, arts and craft shops and wandered the streets being greeted by friendly smiles everywhere we went. I highly recommend a tour with The Township Sisters on your visit in South Africa, it’s left a lasting and memorable impression on me and is a great way to get a truly authentic local experience into your itinerary. Thank you Mandy!

Definitely worth adding this to your itinerary. Mandy is very welcoming and informative. The tour takes you round the township where it is possible to get a real feel for the place. Very odd place where you have people living in accommodation I wouldn't put my dog in to a computer training facility. We helped prepare food for the sick from the clinic and visited a school holiday camp where the kids were singing and dancing. Mandy lives there herself which makes the trip more authentic. No problem to take fotos and no intimidation- there is nothing to be concerned about- go along and enjoy the experience and find out more.
