Mandy's township tour was a truly unique experience. She guided us through Masiphumelele and introduced us to her culture and home. She told us about Masi's history and life there and showed us very interesting places like libraries, community centers or schools. We even visited a kindergarten where the children welcomed us with a dance accompanied by singing.

The highlight of the tour was a traditional home-cooked meal by of one of Mandy's friends, who invited us to her house. The food was fantastic and we were even treated with a dessert.

Thank you again for a memorable tour and for making our stay in South Africa extra special. Keep up the good work. We will be back for sure!

Museums and docents help you understand the history of South Africa, but my Township Sisters tour gave me an insider's look at what's happening NOW in this amazing country, and it was fascinating, eye-opening and inspiring! Yes, the lions on safari are exciting, and the penguins in Simon's Town are cute, but I found myself much more interested in the stories and lives of the everyday people of South Africa, the people who achieved "the miracle of South Africa" - the amazing transition from apartheid to a melting-pot democracy...a transition, in truth, that is still underway.

Mandi is a loving mom who courageously obtained her tour guide license and started a business with her sister, leveraging the one asset they have - their own ongoing experience of day-to-day life living in a shack inside one of the "Townships" with no running water, or plumbing, or insulation - into something amazing. By bravely opening not only the door to her home, but a window into her soul, Mandi gave me one of the best travel experiences I have ever had anywhere.

Mandi will gladly accommodate your schedule, but really for the best experience, you should call early in your planning, before your itinerary fills up, and let her recommend the best time for you to visit, especially if you are particularly interested in education, elder-care, special needs, or seeing a slice of daily life such as meal-preparation, as some of these are more accessible at certain times of the day. Ask lots of questions and bring some extra cash as you may find yourself, as I did, wanting to support the entrepreneurial efforts of the Township residents by doing some of your souvenir and gift shopping here.

And Mandi, if you happen to read this, even though you don't realize it, as a symbol of courage, forgiveness, and the universal hope of a better life for our children, you yourself are the real highlight of your tours.

We were shown around the township by Mandi who is an official guide but is one of the two sisters who set up their business showing tourists around a township, most people could understandably be a bit nervous about the idea, we hear stories about crime and safety but this place was very safe and we enjoyed the tour immensely, we were told about normal Africans' working days, the history of how and why townships were developed and shown around a crèche, the library and the site as a whole. Mandi was always knowledgeable and interesting, so much better than an open top bus, and I really like open top buses!

Ali and Mandy are warm, welcoming and full of enthusiasm. I called them at the last minute one morning to see about organizing a tour for myself and my 9 year old son. We were welcomed with open arms, immediately accommodated and had a wonderful few hours learning about a resourceful community. I happened to mention that my son is writing a report on his trip and Ali and Mandy we eager to answer questions and to provide him with any additional information he might need.

The special needs centre is a moving testament to the will and care of the people working there, the library is very impressive, the children in the crèche are sweet and exuberant and the whole tour leaves an indelible mark on one's soul.

More tourists should include this as part of their trip to the region, to better understand life and the people here, rather than simply driving past Masi and not fully understanding what goes on behind the road sign.

This is truly a wonderful, engaging and vibrant experience!

For me it is the first time that I go to Africa and when I arrived in Capetown I didn’t felt to be in Africa but more in a rich american big city with a lot of different cultures.
On my second day Mandy (the guide that lives in Masi) guided me around Masi township were I had the acknowledgement that I really am in Africa and that there are still a lot of people living in really poor condition.
If you are in capetown and you really want to live this city completely you really should visit Masi township!
There was no better way to start the tour than with a warm welcoming from the new cats Bingo and Petra from Mandy (tour guide) and her lovely children.
Mandy did an awesome work explaining me the details of the life in Masi and I really felt save and welcome in a special friendly unknown atmosphere.
I highly recommend this tour to everyone!

Thanks to the Mandy and Ali for showing me and my girlfriend around Masi. It was fantastic to get a real insight into life in the Township. The people who live here are incredibly humble and gracious. We got shown around a school for children suffering with disabilities and it was amazing to see the work that the staff put in here everyday. They really do make a difference in the lives of the children who go there.

We also went to a creche where younger children were singing and playing games with other volunteers from i-to-i. They sang us songs in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa and were running around with their faces painted having a great time.

I really couldn't recommend the Township Sisters enough. They do such an incredible job and are so passionate about what they do, if you're in Cape Town you should really go and visit, you'll have a truly unforgettable day!

Mandi and Florian took us on a fantastic tour of Masi. We visited Mandi's home, the library, a lovely sewing shop, the creche, and then we had a bite to eat (chicken and pap!) at Mandi's friend's house. The tour felt safe and professional, but also personal and relaxed. I would highly recommend this activity to anyone visiting the area. Thank you Mandi and Flo!

I have been meaning to go on a township tour for ages now - and this one was a great choice for someone who wants an insight into township life without feeling too much like a tourist. Mandi is an excellent, friendly, professional guide who is enthusiastic about telling others about this vibrant community. The fact that she lives in Masi gives her an insight that is invaluable. I also loved being able to ask any question (no matter how basic). Highly recommended no matter whether this is your first visit to South Africa or are a South African.

This tour - lead by two great and inspiring south african ladies - gives you the opportunity to discover all sides of South Africa - especially the sides you would not usually experience as a tourist. Mandy who lives in Masiphumelele knows her hood well and can tell you many stories about the history and the nowadays life in the township. Ali has been involved and working with projects and people of Masiphumelele for years. The specially nice thing about this township tour compared to others - it is more personal and always adaptable to the interests, which makes it real!
