You get to the island via a boat. Then a bus takes you to the prison. Our guide was a former inmate of the prison. It's also where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated and you get to see his cell on the tour.

Robben Island is certainly a must see if you are in Cape Town. On a nice day, the boat ride itself is a great experience as you go from the V&A Waterfront to the island. Once you get there, the bus tour and guided tour is very informative and something to experience.

Really interesting trip. Excellent guides who have been prisoners of Robben Island previously so offer a real insight into what life here was like. Cant visit Cape Town without seeing Robben Island

As I said in the title, the tour was informative but the delivery of the information should be improved. We spent too much time on the bus and for the ones sitting in the middle, they saw nothing. Then the speech by the x prisoner was great but it was so uncomfortable to sit down and some had to stay... More

Dispite it,s gruesome past this was an excellent, enlightening trip not to be missed when in Cape Town. Excellent guided tour by an ex-inmate.

Luckily, we were able to get last minute tickets. We had missed our morning ferry but could join a group in the afternoon. The ferry rides were nice and informative. On the ride back we had a fantastic view of the sunset. The tour on the island, especially inside the prison - led by a former inmate - was very... More

Book your robben island trip way ahead of travelling. The tour is done by an ex political prisoner. We had Sparks who was there for seven years before he was released early(originally down for 15). Great museum with a real sense of oppression and discrimination. Also the resolute attitude of the worst treated really comes through. Trip is divided into... More

Being a local South African never having visited Robben island I made a special trip to do this tour! So rich in history, it is a must do tour BUT book in advance online - much easier! Also do not expect much in terms of information - the bus tour guide and guides in the prison pretty much repeat what... More

I was initially really exciting about doing this tour. Pleasant ride across to the island with beautiful views of the Table Mountain and surrounds. Tour started with a bus ride with commentary around the island. Followed by a tour inside the prison with an ex political prisoner. In theory thus should have been amazing. However I was so uninterested by... More
