The Robben Island Trip is really a Mandela pillgrimage. As you probably know Nelson Mandela was an inmate here for a number of years. You really have to seek in advance and the trip is quite expensive and the times are a bit restrictive (Three "Sailings" per day)

The boat ride over was rough but sheltered and only 40 minutes or so. The ride is worth it to see the stark living conditions the people had during the prison years. Ex political prisoners do the guiding and are very educational. Our only complaint was his thick accent and speedy speech made it difficult to understand. I was surprised... More

This prison was made famous because Nelson Mandela was imprisoned here for a while. It's been a prison for hundreds of years. It is now a historical monument reached by a ferry from the V&A waterfront. Buy tickets in advance online or by phone in the summer. Upon arrival on the island the ferry passengers were divided into two groups,... More

If you're interested in history and the Apartheid regime, you should definitely visit. Booking tickets online is easy but you need to do it well in advance if you have any sort of time constraints. The tour inside the prison is done by a former political prisoner. Very informative. Unfortunately, we got stuck in a group who required a translator... More

This is a great trip, taking about half a day. Very interesting tour around the prison. The tours are carried out by former prisoners themselves. It a a real insight into how harsh life must have been for Nelson Mandela and his fellow prisoners. The boat trip there and back is also enjoyable with really good views looking back at... More

The prison that held Mandela for 17 years in solitary confinement. A very inspiring place standing testimony to what human spirit can achieve even in the face of adversity.

Daniel helped us understand the cultural context before and after Mandela, and it was extremely useful. He told us what Mandela had to support overthere, and the history of Robben Island. It is now no longer a prison but we feel what was in place when it was a prison.

We knew our trip to Cape Town had to include a visit to Robben Island, as it is so significant to not only South Africa's history but to the history of the world. The tour was truly disappointing. You must have a pre-booked ticket to visit Robben Island. This is easy to do on their website, and ferries run all... More
