A full day hike that exceeded all expectations on Table Mountain. As others have said immense knowledge on the plants and also SA history. With so many species of plants there it is really is recommended to help immerse yourself in the astonishing diversity and identify a pea from a daisy.

I am so grateful to our son Andrew for booking a tour with Dominic Chadbon, the Fynbos Guy! What an extraordinary 8 1/2 hours! Dominic Met us promptly at 7 AM and drove us down the Cape of good hope. We stopped at boulders beach to see the South African penguins. He brought a lovely beach breakfast with assorted goodies and hot drinks. And set it up in an enchanting setting on the beach. Then we ended up driving to various stops both on the Indian ocean side and on the Atlantic ocean side. Throughout, Dominic informed us of so many things about the flora and fauna and history of the area. I felt like I was in a seminar. And of course he was so flexible and could tell what was interesting to us and spoke to those things. We learned so much! He is a delightful man with so much knowledge to share. I understand that he leads lots of active tours including climbing table mountain and Lionshead and probably many other things. Halfway through the day, he brought us to a lovely picnic site and produced another alfresco meal! Perfect. Just exactly what we all would like. Walking on these beaches with him was the best experience. He brought us to a beach where there was an elephant seal! He explained that the seal was probably from Antarctica! I especially enjoyed the stops at Olifantsboos, Black rocks, and Buffels Bay. Dominic is the kind of guy that is a gift to experience!!

We had another great hike on Table Mountain with Dominic. This time we started in Camps bay, joined the pipe track and then ascended the 12 apostles via The Diagonal track up Porcupine ravine. Great climb, steep in places and a bit scary on one of the ledges but Dominic instils you with such confidence to tackle anything. Stopped for coffee and muffins with absolutely stunning views over Lions Head and Camps Bay. Upon reaching the top, we had a fascinating walk over to the reservoirs and saw the ( now closed ) steam engine and derelict mining machines. We had a brief stop at the mountain climbers club hut which again was fascinating. We then descended via Kasteelspoort which is steep but easier path than the way up. Dominic’s knowledge of the area, the fynbos, birds, butterflies etc makes for a truly interesting walk. Another great day out with Dominic!!!!

We’ve hiked with Dominic 4 times in the last 2 weeks in some beautiful places (Cape Hope, Table Mountain & Jonkershoek (my favourite)). Not only is his knowledge immense on all Cape/South African subjects (flora/fauna/birds/geology/history) but he is very considerate to his guests and great at recommending lesser used routes and routes to suit every ability. He is also a really great person, interesting, funny and enjoyable to be with. Everyone visiting Cape Town should spend at least one day with the fynbos/fantastic guy/guide!

After spending three days with Dominic, it was obvious that if you have limited time in Cape Town and the Western Cape, and you are interested in hiking, birds, flowers, snakes, whales & other mammals, history or culture, then to get the best out of your days you need a guide. And if you need a guide, you need Dominic. And if he is not available, change the dates of your trip. You won't regret it. Simple.
