About Vamos Township Tours
Vamos is deeply embedded in the Langa Township through its ownership (Siviwe), tour guides (Siviwe, Nathi, Gladstone, Abosh), and community involvement (Happy Feet Youth Project). Touring with Vamos is like being a guest in our neighbourhood! We live here, this is our home and you are our special guest. Our experiences too, are different. We take smaller groups on interactive walking or cycling tours around Langa. We visit friends in their homes and shacks, we hear their stories, we show you their businesses, we share traditional Xhosa beer, we smell sidewalk barbecues, (taste if you'd like), visit shebeens and spaza stores. We want to share with you, a slice of life in the townships. On weekday mornings, your tour will include a meal, usually a barbecue at the well-known Mzoli's in Guguletu. Our afternoon tours include a visit to the Happy Feet Youth Project. On Sundays, we include a visit to a Gospel Church. The unexpected thing about a tour with Vamos, is that most guests come away feeling positive and inspired. Our tours are not about poverty .... yes you will see signs of poverty, but rather our tours are about people and how they are lifting themselves out of their poverty. Positive, resilient, hopeful people who are friendly, welcoming and proud of their culture and history.

What an amazing and important tour. I think that this tour should be a requirement for all. To visit a township is an opportunity to learn about the social complexities of South Africa’s history, to better understand the layers of atrocities committed against her people, and to see how these factors continue to keep a system in place that represses communities of color. To visit a township is also an opportunity to see vibrancy, community, beauty, life, and hope. Thank you to our guide, Wandile, for educating us, sharing your insights, and for giving us an amazing tour of Langa.

I had a fascinating private tour of Langa with a lovely guide. It is an amazingly varied area with some lovely newly built detached houses with gardens; social housing with solar panelled heating; older social housing; shipping containers and quite basic shanty homes. Everyone is really welcoming - I've never shaken so many hands ever. There is a cultural centre - government sponsored - where artists can work and train young people and where visitors can buy pottery or paintings. An amazing dancing display was put on just for me by Happy Feet, an attempt by the tour company to fund initiatives to encourage young people to aim for success. All the little children came in and sat on the floor to watch. From pick up to drop off in Cape Town my tour lasted 4 hours and was an excellent introduction to the lives of people in Langa.

Thanks for your positive review. Sometimes visitors are concerned that they may be perceived to be voyeur-like, but your review conveys the genuine warmth and welcoming spirit of township communities across South Africa. Please come and visit us again.

We, a family of 5, had a lovely and inspiring morning in Langa with Nela. The tour was interesting, full of personal stories and we even got to meet his granny. Felt totally safe and welcomed. Nela gave us a sneak peak at the church on Sunday, which was super energetic and vibrant. Nela you’re the best, wishing you all happiness in the world! (And a Lamborghini haha!:)

If you can ride a bike then a bike tour of Langa with Vamos (Footsteps to freedom) is the way to do it. Our guide was from Langa which is a huge plus as he was able to answer our many questions. We saw so much - including the shacks one sees along the N2 to the newest homes built by long-time residents. We met a couple of shop owners, listened to an impassioned young man talk of Langa’s history since its inception, and biked a large part of the township- much better than a walking tour. Safe and a great way to see the non-touristy Cape Town. Bring some extra Rand to buy handmade articles at the culture center.

Hello Nancy, thanks for your lovely comments about your Township Cycling Tour with Vamos. One is certainly able to cover more ground on bike than on foot. We we worried that our bikes may have been too small for a 2m tall adult ... glad it worked out OK!

Terrific experience to see what people are doing to improve their life in the oldest of the townships. Many thanks to our guide for the day, Wandile picked us up from our hotel and drove us into the township where he was from, we walked the streets and saw 3 levels of standard of living for the locals to progress through if they wish, tine shacks and lorry containers being lived it, to brick built but small living accommodations, to nice sized well looked after houses! People seemed happy getting on with their lives, stopped for a Braai (SA bbq), Wandile picked the meat, show us the Braai cooks and then we sat outside to eat it once ready. Great, uplifting and safe experience to see the inside of a township. thanks again Wandile.
