About
Uthando (Love) South Africa is an internationally award winning and unique Non Profit Organization and Fair Trade certified company. Uthando raises funds and other forms of assistance for a broad range of inspiring and innovative community development projects. Uthando runs Philanthropic Educational Excursions tailormade scheduled or private visits (for groups of any size). We take visitors into the townships (impoverished areas created during Apartheid on the outskirts of Cape Town) to visit incredible community development projects. We shine a light on the remarkable people and projects that are helping to build the new South Africa at grass roots level. On our visits we tell the remarkable story and history of South Africa and its brutal past, we discuss pertinent issues confronting our people, and provide an inspiring sense of hope through the efforts of dedicated grass roots leaders. Our visits are authentic, meaningful, non-invasive, respectful and beneficial to the communities.

Some of the most authentic and important genuine knowledge you can obtain, if you want to know more about the legacy of apartheid (which you should).
But also about hope and what’s being done to change the lives of less privileged people of Cape Town. An amazing experience, that I can highly recommend for anyone visiting Cape Town. Actually it’s a must.

Amazing tour! We visited five projects in various townships and this will probably be the most memorable day of our whole trip to Cape Town!! We danced, we sung, we ate delicious food and heard storied from a lot of incredibly inspiring people.
Since James supports over 70 projects you can really customize your experience of the tour. I really recommend visiting Seed, a gorgeous permaculture garden & school.
We were all left really inspired! Do yourself a huge favor and do this tour if you’re in Cape Town!!

A very interesting and "gentle" peep into the "other" side of life in Cape Town. Very uplifting to see the enthusiasm of the people we met, and the singing and dancing was very moving.. Bravo, this should absolutely be part of a visit to Cape Town

We had a truly beautiful half day with James visiting a few projects in Delft and Khayelitsha. We learned a lot about the history and people of Cape Town (and South Africa), but also about the hope for the future. James doesnt sugercoat it, but also radiates hope, which is really great to be a part of. We were very inspired and touched by the people we met and places/projects we saw. We can learn a lot from them, for example about togetherness. Our trip would definitly not have been complete without this excursion and we hope to be back in the future. Please dont hesitate booking an excursion with Uthando and asking them a lot of questions. This is an experience you dont want to miss out on.

Most inspiring day of my trip to South Africa! I walked away from this experience feeling a lot of hope for South Africa through the promise of the next generations. I felt that they embody Mandela's vision. Wow!!!

We felt totally safe during our visit to the Cape Flats and thoroughly appreciated the insights that Xolani , our guide, gave us into the political , economic and social history of his country , South Africa.
Uthando are a non -profit making organisation that use the money from tourism to help support community initiatives .Having found out our interests we were taken to visit a nursery school , a choir and dance group and a garden attached to a secondary school growing fruit and vegetables . The man responsible for setting up the urban gardens was inspirational as were all the people that we met . A particular highlight was bumping into the choir/ dance troupe performing at one of the restaurants on the waterfront in Cape Town . I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this organisation

It was one of the highlights of my entire 3 week holiday to South Africa. I really appreciate not only seeing first hand the fantastic work they are doing but also learning more about the social, political and economic landscape that explain why this work is so important.

A really touching experience with Uthando in Khayelitsha. We learned a lot about the history and the current situation in Cape Town and South Africa with Xolani, our guide, a great story teller. We visited 3 projects during our trip which was very safe. We really loved this respectful way to meet people involved in projects and challenges that give hope for the future. An incredible human experience.
Don’t hesitate to book a visit with Uthando!

Leading up to our trip to Cape Town we were working out what we wanted to experience. Research led me to Uthando and rather than doing a voyeuristic tour that is not benefiting the communities we settled on uthando.
Xolani was a terrific guide and took us to 3 community projects that Uthando supports in the township of Khayelitsha. This area is home to almost 1/4 of the population of Cape Town. It was amazing and uplifting to see the work and determination of these communities and what they are achieving.
Don't hesitate to go with Uthando to the townships. We felt very safe and loved the interaction. Thanks James for facilitating an extra excursion just for us!! Much appreciated
A must do when you are in Cape Town!!

Hi, is it possible to take kids on the tour? We're travelling with our 3 year old daughter. If so, how far in advance do we need to make the reservation? Thanks, Mila

Hi, I notice in your information that you say the tours are suitable for FIT travellers. Could you perhaps give an indication of what level of fitness is required please?

Hi, There is virtually no walking at all. You are picked up and drive to different Uthando projects. Obviously, you would walk into the building but no different than parking to walk into your home. Don't worry about the fit aspect. You WILL enjoy the tour. Good luck.

Do you get to choose which of the projects you are interested in? Or do they choose for you?

Hi Reviewer, thank you for the question. You can certainly choose provided availability of the chosen projects and such if done in advance. But do note projects are subject to availability.
