Description:

The Footsteps to Freedom walking tour of the historic heart of Cape Town...

The Footsteps to Freedom walking tour of the historic heart of Cape Town tells the story of Cape Town and its people. We use streets, buildings, monuments, memorials and the passing street-scene as props develop a story of Cape Town and South Africa's dramatic past. Stories of Dutch and British colonial rule, slavery and apartheid, and finally our peaceful transition to a real democracy. We gather before 10h30 (Mon-Sat) in the lobby of the Taj Cape Town Hotel, located in centre of Cape Town's cultural and historic precinct. At 10h30 the 2½ hr walking tour starts from the steps of the Bishop Robert Gray Memorial, adjacent Taj Cape Town hotel.

After arriving late at night into Cape Town, this tour was our first activity the next day. A fantastic orientation and history lesson about The Mother City. An easy walk and very informative guide.

We had Dr. Ivor Shaskolsky for our walking tour. We were extremely impressed with his expertise on Cape Town and it's history, no question was unanswered. The walking tour took us around the Cape Town and he pointed out special land marks and told us about them. It was very educational and we enjoyed it very much. We highly recommend... More

We took a full day tour of Cape Town with Garth. He broke down the history, culture and people of South African into four periods so that we could clearly understand the complex dynamics of the country. Garth was knowledgeable, friendly and answered our many questions with clarity and expertise. He is friendly, down to earth and respectful of the... More

My family (2 adults +3 teens) had the privilege to spend the day with Garth and Nati on the Footsteps to Freedom and Township visit. Garth did a great job conveying the history of South Africa from 1600s to present. Garth is immensely knowledgeable and personable and kept all of us engaged. In the morning we enjoyed getting an overview... More

We decided to take the general tour of Cape Town at the suggestion of Frommer's travel guide and a friend. I am so glad we did! Ivor was both a local and an expert on Cape Town. He had a great deal of knowledge to share with us, both personal and factual. He spent hours talking to us about Cape... More

Our guide was very well informed, and was passionate about his work! The tour was amazing! Would highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to take an in-depth look at the history of Cape Town. I would highly recommend brushing up on your Cape Town history before the tour to make it even more enjoyable!

It was excellent in every respect. Very interesting and informative. The guide, Dr Ivor Shaskolsky, was extremely knowledgeable, willing to answer all questions and keen to discuss a lot of key issues related to the tour. It took about 3 to 3.5 hours, covered a lot of the city and enabled us to understand more fully the social and political... More

Our family (with adult kids) hired Garth for a tailor-made two day tour, in and around Cape Town. We saw everything from penguins and ostriches to the Kirstenbosch Gardens and historical landmarks. We even had a little hike around Cape of Good Hope, as well as a lunch and stroll through Langa Township. The entire experience was rich, and Garth... More
