About
Footsteps to Freedom specialises in private touring in and around Cape Town. Curious travellers sometimes want a little more than simply scenic drives, selfies and shopping. Our Footsteps Guides have all had other professional careers before training as tourist guides. We'll reward your curiosity with specifically crafted experiences in Cape Town, the Cape Winelands and the Cape of Good Hope. Our private signature walking tour of the historic heart of Cape Town, "Footsteps to Freedom", tells the story of Cape Town and its people. We use streets, buildings, monuments, memorials and the passing street-scene as props develop a story of Cape Town and South Africa's dramatic past. Stories of Dutch and British colonial rule, slavery and apartheid, and finally our peaceful transition to a real democracy. The "Mandela in Cape Town: from prisoner to president" walking tour of Cape Town focusses on the story of apartheid and Nelson Mandela's role in its defeat and demise.

We enjoyed a wonderful walking tour with Ivor in Capetown. The tour was well-planned, and Ivor was incredibly knowledgeable about Capetown and its history.
We enjoyed every moment of it -- Thanks for a wonderful time!

We booked our tour at very short notice but that wasn't a problem for our lovely guide Zuzeka who gave us an informative, authentic insight into the history of Langa where she lives with her family. She answered all our questions honestly, showed us around and talked about life in the township. We also saw some amazing arts and crafts created from recycled matetials by some of the township residents. It was a great tour - highly recommended.

We spent a morning tour in Cape Town with Garth Angus of Footsteps to freedom. He provided a clear, interesting and informative picture in a listener friendly manner. In a short morning, Garth was able to take us through historical and current social dynamics, challenges and issues in the most vivid, cordial and interesting way. We learned so much in just a few hours. Garth’s presentation offered a helpful framework for our understanding of all we experienced during our South Africa trip. Highly recommended.

Our guide Ivor was superb. Very knowledgeable and patient to explain both what and why things happened the way they did, the various turns of events, the history of the places. I found a new appreciation and respect for the South Africans, especially the purple people in the Cape of Storm.
One of the best two hours I've invested and I'll come back for more. You know its good when I didn't even bother to take photo of the piece of the Berlin Wall.

Our first contact with Ivor Shasklosky was immediately very sympathetic. He took the time to know us a bit better on our background and interests. We met in the Mount Nelson hotel and he gave us some insight in its history and the art of Dylan lewis.
His huge knowledge and enthusiasm of cape town “contaminated” us. Ivor is an educated personality with a rich life experience. We appreciated his knowledge on history and politics of the RSA also in a broader world perspective. During the walk he showed us details and highlights in the centre seasoned with many little stories. He took the time needed without looking the clock. We walked for around 3,5 hours and it was the perfect start of our 4 days stay in Cape Town.
We can highly recommend this tour with Ivor. Thank you, Bart and Christine

Thank you for your response Bart and Christine and we are so pleased you enjoyed your visit to Cape Town and your time with Ivor. The Footsteps to Freedom city walking tour is certainly a great way to orientate yourself amidst the complex history and politics of our country.

We are an African American family. My husband I took our two adult children and daughter-in-law on a trip to South Africa, which included Johannesburg, Cape Town and safaris in Kruger. Our guide in Cape Town for a half-day walking tour was Garth who simply was OUTSTANDING. He is a fountain of knowledge about not only SA history, but US and world history as well and easily wove together parallels and contrasts between US history and SA history. While a native South African, Garth also had spent time in the US studying and was able to bring his personal knowledge to bear as well. He is a natural teacher and a delightful tour guide. I highly recommend both the tour company and Garth personally.

Footsteps to Freedom went above and beyond to ensure I could experience a Township tour before I left the country. I am SO glad they did. Our guide Nela, was able to provide us with great information, since he has lived his whole life in The White City. He had great insights into the history and the present status of the townships. I highly recommend taking a tour with Footsteps to Freedom, and if you can, request Nela.

Thanks Mark for your feedback, there was a bit of perseverance required on your side too, and so glad you didn't leave town without visiting the townships and getting an all round view of life in Cape Town. So pleased you enjoyed the experience and Nela will be delighted to hear from you as well - I'll pass your feedback onto him.

My partner and I were fortunate enough to have a trip through Africa planned for us by a company in the US, and Garth was hand selected as the perfect match for us. We both appreciate the outdoors, history, culture, nature, wildlife, and especially seeing the sites, but avoiding the tourist crowds (no small task).
Garth met us at our hotel on our first full day in South Africa, and we knew right away that he was going to be a good match for us. He's incredibly knowledgeable, extremely personable, and just all around easy to be with. We had planned to tour around Cape Town with him for two days, and spent the first couple of minutes chatting about what we were and weren't interested in, what was important to us, and what the plan was. Garth did a great job of putting together a nice two day agenda that was packed with sites and activities, but never felt rushed, crowded or overwhelming. Everywhere we went together, he did a great job of pointing out things we would've missed on our own, giving us in depth history and background, and moving us past the tourist traps quickly. His knowledge of plant life, wildlife, history and culture is beyond impressive. Conversation with Garth always felt easy, like we were wandering around Cape Town with a family friend. I would strongly recommend him and his services to anyone looking to see as much of Cape Town as they possibly can, while still feeling chill and comfortable doing so. We've hired a lot of guides in cities all over the world, and Garth was definitely one of the best we've had!

Hi Jake and Brian
Thanks for taking the time to review your experience in Cape Town, its not always easy to sit down and gather your thoughts after you get back from a vacation to be met with 1000 emails in your Inbox!
I also had a great time with both you and Brian ... I think Californians and Capetonians generally have much in common, ..... culturally, climatically, and dare I say it, politically.
We spoke about droughts, fires, water and even how we've changed the way we approach gardening. Check out your email ... I'll send you a pic of a fabulous flowering Aloe in our Cape Town garden.
Take care .. and spread the word about what a cool place Cape Town is and how friendly Africans are! Never mind our amazing restaurants.
Till next time .. Garth

We can definitely recommend the tour. Many insights into the history of the Cape region and the global dimensions of conquest, economics and oppression.

Hello Christoph ...
We had a wonderful morning together, despite the south-easter! What makes these tours so interesting and inspiring for me, is to also hear about your country's story. The "inter-connectedness" of country's histories is fascinating.
History can be so much more interesting than how is was taught by many of our school teachers of yesteryear.
Travel well. Garth
