Intense! Emotionally-moving! So beautiful. Emotions storm in with the triggering of your senses at each level of the exhibition. You get free entrance if it is your birthday month

A range of different mediums of art (installation, paintings, drawings, video etc) that were genuinely thought-provoking and educational. A lot of the work 'stayed' with me long after the visit.

Some areas were strong in graphic content, but there were many fair warnings beforehand.

Much of the art focuses on conversations around race, ethnicity, and identity; much which is moving, and insightful.

The space does lean heavily on one particular artist, across two floors, however the work is very much worth the time to look and read.

The basement floor had works from young artists, and that was one of my favourite areas. Would thoroughly recommend a visit to Zeitz MOCAA.

The building itself is impressive, inside and out. The staff friendly and helpful.
The restaurant on top floor has great food, and views!
A must-visit in Cape Town!

Now, I'm not a huge fan by any means of Modern Art, however my wife does enjoy it and she said she would recommend a visit.
As an engineer, myself, it's definitely worth a visit to see the internal structure of the building.

it was really nice & the showing we had had some really great pieces but it was quite empty. I've seen photos of some really great showings, but the one I went to had a lot of open space & I got bored quite quickly tbh. otherwise, I really enjoyed some of the artwork from the kids , it was heartbreaking (in a good, educational way) to see their lives through in such simple but beautiful ways.

What a fantastic building, the architecture is easily the best thing about the Zeitz gallery.
Reception is cool and I don't mean the temperature. Bag storage is self service. One of the exhibition levels was closed (ie 1/3 of it) the remaining exhibits were in our personal views, pretty unappealing, low quality, and just not very interesting. We have visited galleries all around the world and this was one of the least inspiring.
Don't bother.

Thank you for your review and feedback. Our exhibitions change regularly, therefore, at certain times, floors will be closed as we install a new exhibition for our visitors to enjoy and we will always ensure there is signage indicating these changes. We are sorry to hear that you did not find any of our current exhibitions appealing. Zeitz MOCAA's mandate is to provide artists from Africa and its diaspora with a platform, as well as to bring the works, experiences and narratives of African artists to a global audience. We hope you will find artworks of interest to you on your next visit.

The exhibits had variety but felt connected, and the building itself was really interesting. Glad to have spent some time checking it out.

A beautiful visit with impressive and relevent exhibits. Be sure to really let the artwork sink into your thoughts and consciousness. As a bonus, the building itself is a wonderful piece of converted-use local history. Well worth the visit for art museum fans.

Firstly DO NOT BRING your children to this exhibition! As it’s rather crude with a lot of male and female genitalia exhibited in very strange ways! I am a very opened minded person and enjoy all art in all forms however this exhibit, I felt was an angry expression of a few artists! We came away feeling rather depressed! We had visited in 2017 and there had been some great ART. I wandered why after it was very quiet and not the usual crowd!

We appreciate your feedback about your experience. Zeitz MOCAA has always prioritised the experience of all our guests. We value that all reactions are valid and real. Tracey Rose’s work is intentionally provocative and aimed at creating important discourse and conversation around difficult topics so we understand a strong response to the work. I can share that in preparation for this show, the Zeitz MOCAA curatorial team consulted with experts in education, communication, people management and more to ensure that our team could thoroughly engage and protect our audiences should they not feel comfortable with the contents of this particular exhibition. This includes emphasising a recommended age restriction, advising visitors to the museum about the graphic nature of some of the artworks at the front of house before entering, as well as signage at the entrance to specific works. The museum offers kid-friendly exhibitions such as GoldenDean's 'Soft Vxnxs' in the museum atrium as well as at the Centre for Art Education. Our exhibitions change regularly and we hope you will find artworks of interest to you on your next visit.

Of the 5 floors, row were shut for exhibition updates. The other 3 were very disappointing and definitely not worth a visit. Best thing was the Architecture of the museum itself- a converted silo.

What an amazing transformation from a cluster of grain siloes to an art museum! As many other reviewers have stated, it would be worth the visit just to see the building. Don't forget to go to the 6th floor and walk out on the terrace. You can look down through circles of glass to see the reception area six floors below. The entrance fee is not cheap but it is worthwhile. There is an audio tour that you can use with their free wireless but I found it hard to follow and to find the segment that matched up with a given gallery so didn't use it. There are excellent narratives in each gallery that explain what you are looking at. One of the most striking exhibitions was the one by a photojournalist about the Rwandan Genocide. The curation of the exhibit is like none I have either seen. You enter by walking by a series of weekly Newsweek covers from the start of the genocide until the point when the international community actually took place. The world was obsessed with the OJ Simpson trial and the suicide of Kurt Cobain. It is striking how long it took for the world to pay attention to Rwanda - and how many hundreds of thousands of lives that were lost as a result. There is an entire room filled with a heap of slides of more or less one photo - the eyes of a young boy - a traumatized survivor. The most striking gallery is one of 15 boxes - all with graphic photographs taken after the genocide unfolded. However, the photojournalist sealed the photos inside the boxes which people in the gallery are unable to open. All you can do is read the vivid descriptions of the photos written on the boxes. You are forced to picture decomposing bodies in a church where people had sought solace from the violence. It is an experience I will never forget.

Thank you for your lovely review. We are so pleased you enjoyed your visit to Zeitz MOCAA and especially the Alfredo Jaar exhibit. We are, however, sorry to hear that you were unable to make use of the audio guides and do hope our improvements to this will make a difference on your next visit.
