We had a fantastic tour with Craig Nudelman of Mother City Jewish Tours today. He took us on a walk through four centuries of history, from the earliest Dutch settlements to today, with an eye towards the role of the Jewish community through the entire time. We walked into District Six, over to the Castle of Good Hope, past City Hall and the Houses of Parliament and onward to the Company's Garden before returning to the Gardens Community Center (the hub of the Cape Town Jewish community). Along the way, he told us about the significance of each place we stopped, answered our questions, and even made sure we got good photos of Cape Town's natural wonders like Devil's Peak and (of course) Table Mountain.
Thanks, Craig!
Thanks, Craig!

A unique and fascinating tour of the area of the Sixth District and other nearby areas, ending up at the enclave including the Great Synagogue, the Jewish Museum, the Holocaust Museum, a kosher cafe, and a gift store.
The tour was wonderful because it gave us the best overviewed of our trip on the overall history of So Africa including how Jews had played a part. Though Craig kept coming back to the "why am I showing you this on a Jewish tour" question, his talk provided wonderful insights into So Africa in general and, of course, the role of Jews past and present. Would highly recommend.

My family did a half-day Mother City Jewish Tour with Craig, and we all had an excellent time. Craig has clearly spent a bunch of time researching the Jewish community of Cape Town, and he did a fantastic job of setting the history of the Jews in South Africa within the larger historical context of South Africa. Along the way, he included interesting anecdotes, that he pointed out worthwhile landmarks that we would have otherwise missed. We also really enjoyed getting to know him and hearing his thoughts on a number of different topics regarding South Africa today. Would definitely recommend to others.

Please add this to your list of Jewish must-dos in the Mother City! Craig is so knowledgeable, honest, passionate, personable, and kind. He is able to weave historical, political, economic, ecological, religious, and personal information into his narrative to really bring the deep and rich Jewish history of Cape Town to life. I hung on every word and still wish I'd recorded what he said because I can't remember half of what rolled off his tongue so easily. You won't regret it! Kol ha kavod and thank you for enriching my Cape Town experience, Craig!

Craig is a wonderful tour guide and educator. The tour covers the history of South Africa and of Cape Town from a Jewish perspective.
Starting from the Dutch East India Company, through Apartheid and to the present, Craig tells the story of the Cape Town Jewish community. All this is done on a leisurely walk through central Cape Town. The highlights include, the Jewish Museum, Castle of Good Hope, District Six, Company's Garden and Garden Shul.

Craig offers a well-structured, well-paced tour that will teach you about Jewish, Cape and South African history and their intersections and leave you furiously Googling for more answers.
He’s articulate, patient and approachable and is a wonderful ambassador for Cape Town, South Africa and it’s Jewish community.
I highly recommend making the time.

Craig was amazing in his knowledge. He was great at interweaving the history of the city, history of the state and the Jewish influence along the way. Bring good walking shoes as the on the ground tour made it so special. Can't recommend Craig enough.

Amazing tour! Craig is very knolwedgable about South African history, and was able to put Cape Town's Jewish history into that context. I also learned about the Jewish history of District Six, which even after a District Six tour I knew nothing about! Craig is also very friendly and fun. A great way to spend an afternoon!

Hello. How far in advance do you need to book a tour? How much does it cost? Is there a minimum number of people that have to book the tour? It seems from what I read that it is a walking tour; how long is it? Are there any visits to Synagogues, Jewish museums or community centers . We'll be doing an organized guided tour in S. Africa in August 2019. It will start in Cape Town and end in Johannesburg. Before we book flights we wanted to make sure we added 1-2 days to each of thiose major cities to include some Jewish heritage/history . Thank you, Marian from Canada

Hello!
Thanks for getting hold of me.
You can book the tour as far in advance as you want. However, I will only know my schedule in mid January.
The tour is R800 pp and I have a two people minimum for the tour.
It is a 3.5 walking tour through the city. The tour stops at the Gardens Shul where you can hear a brief history.
For an extra R150 I can take you through the Jewish Museum and the Holocaust Museum.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks!
