About
A unique visual arts platform in the Lowveld, the White River Gallery presents contemporary fine art originating from Mpumalanga, showcasing the Lowveld as a distinct node of creativity. The gallery also presents broader South African and Southern African artists, seeking to expose regional artistic diversity. We aim to focus awareness around the cultural significance of art, recognising art as a means of social, political, or evolutionary expression. Established in 2008, the gallery is currently directed by Dana MacFarlane whose roots are grounded in business and corporate marketing. Dana’s lifelong passion for art ignited a career change ten years ago when small exhibitions were curated from her home. Halifax Art was formed, resulting in numerous exhibitions, art projects, art fairs, and collaborations over the years. White River Gallery and Halifax Art merged in 2017. Our ethos is grounded in personal engagement with our clients and collectors; the journey we walk with each fuell

My first visit to the White River Gallery was in December of 2023, during the summer exhibition "Lull". I was fortunate enough to be selected as one of the artists to exhibit their work in the collective exhibition.

Located in the Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre in White River, the White River Gallery is a stylishly rustic building surrounded by a variety of shops and restaurants. The open floorplan provides a spacious location for visitors to enjoy the artwork on display at their own leisure. The knowledgeable gallery staff are exceptionally welcoming and curteous, and the relaxing atmosphere provides for a leisurely stroll among the beautiful creations by a wide variety of artists.

I would highly recommend a visit if you are in the Lowveld area.

Always something interesting going on at this gallery. Upbeat and contemporary, so much more than one would expect in a small town. Expect a friendly welcome and a quiet airy space. The exhibitions change regularly and the gallery stocks an amazing range of work.

While dining at Magnolia we couldn't help but see the window displays at the White River Gallery. The displays alone were like magnets. It was fun to see the great collection of art pieces.

If you are in the Centre you should pop in and browse. Unlike in some 'stiff' galleries the reception here is friendly and helpful. Exhibits change from time to time and are well presented. Do yourself a favour and walk in - not past!

It’s a bit of a find in more ways than one, firstly it is tucked away at the back of the Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre next to Magnolia Café and secondly it is gallery in the true sense of the word. On display you will find such works as “Chilojo Cliffs” by Walter Voigt, “Amon Vally” Karin Daymond, discover the brilliance of Marieke Prinsloo-Rowe, Nelson Makamo, Tony Fredriksson and one of my personal favorites local artist Rene Eloff. I was lucky enough to attend a presentation by and screening would recommend subscribing to the mailing list.
