Resort review – Mamoli Beach Camp
By G Buys
In December 2021 we were fortunate enough to spend 8 days at the secluded Mamoli Beach Camp in Southern Mozambique.
The camp is set in lush shaded beach forest on the leeward side of a big dune. A short walk up a steepish hill and down the other side finds one at a beautiful deserted beach. The water is always warm and mostly clear.
We were a party of four; two adults and two teenagers. We rented the cabin for the adults and one campsite for the kids. The cabin is basic but more than adequate, with a small balcony that also doubles as a kitchen (it’s lovely to cook while looking out at the forest that surrounds the balcony), one large room with two single beds, and a bathroom with shower, toilet and basin.
The camp has an excellent newly built and very clean ablution block, which is more than adequate for the small number of campsites.
The camp manages to feel completely peaceful and far away enough from civilization to hear nothing but forest and ocean sounds at night, but is actually only 10km from Ponta Malongane and its bars and restaurants, and another 7km from Ponta do Oura, where we went on an amazing dolphin encounter.
The point, approximately 1km north of the camp, has one of the best snorkeling spots I’ve ever seen, although it’s a bit tricky to get to, requiring either a strong swimmer with fins or a friendly canoeist to help…
Although I’m not a fisherman, there is excellent surfing off the beach or rocks.
The camp’s host, Peter, is an excellent host, tirelessly ferrying us to the best snorkeling spot in his kayak, encouraging us all to try surfing or body boarding, and generally being an awesome all round guy.
I can’t recommend this place highly enough and will definitely be back.

Mamoli Beach Camp is a small slice of heaven for those who enjoy the ocean and outdoors. The shaded campsite is set within the indigenous coastal forest, with private access to the beach. Our hosts, Pete and Charne, were fantastic. They went above and beyond to guide us snorkeling at a coral-rich reef which must rank amongst the top shore dive sites in Southern Africa.
The staff were friendly and the camp was cleaned daily. We will be back!

Mamoli Beach Camp is truly a slice of paradise. Tranquility at its best. Only a short walk to the beach from camp, either North or South will get you to rock pools (South getting you to Mamoli Point). Be on the lookout for beautiful shells on the way and take in the natural beauty. Fishing is out of this world, flicked with spoons and dropshots and caught a variety of species. The vibe at the camp is so peaceful. Ponta Malongane and Do Ouro is a lovely drive away, prawns and beers a definite must. I was lucky enough to stay for 3weeks, but when I arrived back home I longed to be back at Mamoli. I still do...

The accomodation is delapitated and at night there is poop and gunk falling from the roof. The bedding looks like someone's dead aunt that has been in use for 6 generations as it is torn and full of holes. The roofs are leaking and haphazardly patched with plastic. We cut our stay short and left two days earlier. The attempt of a fridge (which you pay extra for) is rusted and cannot keep anything cool. If you opened the fridge you have to bang on all the corners of the door in the hope that it keep the cool air inside so that it does not escape through the rotten seals. One of the units had such a stench of urine that our friends had to sleep with another couple that were on vacation with us. People in short for the ridiculous amount you pay per night you are better off in a tent or under sthe stars. No power connections in the bungalows and the electric wires that give the units power for light in the evenings are open on the ground with live wires sticking out as the isolation tape is not even properly covering the connections. Horrible discusting and a let down in every aspect of trying to have a break from the hustle and bustle.

We stayed for 7 nights in a group of 6 families with children from 7-13 in the camp. It was simply an amazing experience. From arriving to be met by Peter to lead us through jungle tracks and wetlands because the normal track had been flooded to snorkelling with octopus on a deserted beach. From fresh bread (and beer!) delivered daily to cooking fish from a deep sea fishing trip on an open fire. The camp is great - remote but clean and with the all the basics, including a good ablution block. Peter and his team were very helpful and genuinely nice people. The beach (a few minutes walk over a dune) is stunning - deserted, white sand, warm very clear sea, good waves but not bad currents (whilst we were there). A really great "adventure getaway".

We went on a St Lucia Turtle Tour. It said on their website that 'Our tours do not involve driving on the beach' and 'We believe that the use of any vehicle on a turtle nesting beach in an unnecessary disturbance to the nesting turtles'. They drove on the beach. Their website also said 'We offer 50% money back on all of our St Lucia Turtle tours if no turtles are seen'. We did not see any turtles and requested the 50% money back as stated. They did not refund the money.

Our wish was swimming with dolphins, so we contacted Extreme Nature. We've had a lot of contact in order to arrange the dive, about weather conditions etc. They remained very friendly and helpful throughout the whole experience and arranged everything perfectly.
A very experienced crew helped us find the dolphins on a quick RIB boat and we did swim with them, it was more than amazing.
Thank you Extreme Nature, especially Peter!

We were met off our cruise ship when it docked in Richards Bay. We were a large Group from the ship but we travelled in small coaches to the park. Peter had provided breakfast packs for us to eat enroute to the Game Park. We then boarded open sided vehicles to explore the beautiful game park. We had 2 game drives and enjoyed a good lunch. We saw elephants, white rhino, giraffes, impala and buffalo as well as enjoying the impressive views of the park. Our guide had worked in the reserve for some years and answered all our questions.
Had a really enjoyable day and got some good photos to remember it. Many thanks to Peter for arranging the trip.

Highly recommend staying at this accommodation in Mamoli Beach Camp. The location is peaceful, perfect for a relaxing getaway. The house is clean and well-equipped, providing everything needed for a comfortable stay. The host was fabulous, offering helpful suggestions and able to organise activities to enhance your experience. Overall, a fantastic place to unwind and enjoy a memorable holiday.

We recently booked with Extreme Nature ToursSt Lucia to go deep sea sport fishing.
We were booked on the Wave Dancer operated by Barend.
Barend and Wave Dancer cancelled on us which is not the fault of the agent Extreme Nature Tours, I was however very surprised and frustrated to learn that the 24 hour service the publish to give is not that at all.
Many messages left, eventually we got hold of someone on a land line and got told to call back at 8am. Not quite the 24 hours service they profess.
The problem with fishing charters is that they launch at 0630' after 0800 is no good to the customer.
All said and done, we never did go fishing, Extreme Nature Tours never returned our calls and have now in fact become very rude with email communications saying "had you bothered to call during working hours..."
This saddens me deeply because we went with them knowing they had a 24 hour contact and we were "bothered" , very bothered indeed.
I was extremely "bothered" that I had flown in from the UK to go deep sea sport fishing which didn't happen and then get blamed by an arrogant and rude agent for not calling during working hours. You don't speak to customers like that !
Emails from Leigh Snyders are available for inspection.
I await response here, I wonder what excuse will be for coming. Please keep the same tone as the emails.

We are finally able to respond to reviews again after issues with log in details, so all apologies for the late response. The fact that you felt that our lady in the office was rude to you really bothers me too, this is uncalled for an unacceptable. The fact that she lost her Christmas bonus now bothers her. I'm sorry that your frustration was answered by a bad attitude, this is not the way we usually operate. Kind regards. Charl

Hi. Interested on pricing for family of 4 for dolphin swim. And what is lowest age you do swim with dolphins?
Regards Ella

You should adress the question to the operator of extreme nature tours, Peter Koen . Its swimming in the open sea, so this is not suitable for small children.

Hi Pete, I've read some of the reviews on trip advisor and would like to find out what your pricing is for SA citizens on the swim-with-dolphins-package for 2017? Also whether you have a transfer service from and to Richardsbay airport?
This is a landmark birthday bucket-list item for me and a group booking may be in the making.
Hope to hear from you soon, whereafter I'll shower you with some more questions?
Cheers
Alta

Hi Alta
Thank you so much for your inquiry. We are working on a package for you which we can discuss and which you can adapt to your specific interests. We do indeed do transfers from Richards Bay Airport as well as from King Shaka International, Durban. Could you please give us an estimation of group size as this does influence pricing. Thank you.
Kind Regards
Charl
