A beautiful town, will leafy streets. Survives largely on fishing but there are some other activities around. Park the car in one spot and walk the main road, or even some of the residential side roads.

It's hard to rate a town as a whole, but it makes for a great few days getaway. The commercial side of town consists of one street with a few restaurants and retail. We were impressed with how clean the the town is and how well kept the houses and gardens were in the back streets. Nothing to do in town but of course there are many activities in the area whilst using St Lucia as a base.

The resident population of the town is only a few thousand but it relies heavily on tourism. Virtually every property in the town is geared to tourism. It is a good base for visiting Hluhluwe and Imfazoli National parks. Lots of rhinos in the former and supposedly leopards in the latter. We saw no leopards but many rhinos and hippos.

Only 5 minutes from some huge game reserves, ideal for self-drive safari's. Right on the St.Lucia Lake, with the chance of seeing hippo's walking down the main road ( which we saw).If you do see one in the street, give it plenty of room. These are very dangerous, wild animals. We saw several people taking selfies with their children, getting too close, and then insulting a local ranger when he tried to warn them. We may have come close to seeing an entry to the Darwin Awards !

I went to St Lucia on my SA tour on the recommendation of a South African ex-pat friend. So glad I did. Excellent boat tour to see the hippos in the lagoon and the entrance to the wetland park is close to town, so it's easy to get to. Lovely easy feel to the area - different atmosphere to the rest of the country.

Tip: if you're driving, go into the suburban streets after 9pm and you'll probably see wild rhinos wandering around foraging on the pavement roadsides. An extraordinary sight. But don't get out of your car - they can run much faster than you....

We had a great time on the visit. The guide was excellent, really informative and very willing to chat. The school was amazing, such great little ones who were so excited to see visitors. The rest of the village was fascinating, we learnt so much about the Zulu culture. Highly recommend this - be open minded to all aspects and you will not be disappointed
