a different time and place
Dec 2019
This was one of three cultural villages we visited. Each was very different, and interesting in its own way. We were able to speak (through an interpreter) with the chief and the Sangoma. As we were the only ones there, we could ask quite a few questions, and were able to clear up some misconceptions we had heard. The Sangoma showed us her medicines, and most of them actually have crossover into Western medicine. She also clearly indicated that people who are ill beyond her expertise are sent to the hospital. We learned a lot.

Interesting visit
Aug 2019
We were passing by here on our way back from Kruger Park, so we stopped in to see the village. It was interesting, and quite different from anything else we saw on our trip. It is not a big place, so we could do the tour in about an hour. I wouldn't go out of your way to see it, but if you are passing by, it is worth a stop.

This was an enjoyable show. Combined with dinner BBQ this was a great entertainment value. The dancers were in great shape, and the show lasted about 45 minutes. This was our first experience at seeing a native show.

Very nice to see how the traditional People live and how the culture is there. The Selfmade beer is tasty and you can look in the future with the medicin women. Nice Visit and low budget

Great adaptation of traditional Shangana village life
Feb 2019 • Family
It was a great experience and even enjoyed driving pass the townships to make it there. It was pretty low key when we arrived as only the chief, one wife, medicinal woman/town healer, one other woman and the tour guide were there. I understood the tour for what it was, in that most Shangana ppl no longer live like that but this was how they once lived and their traditions and customs. I did probe and ask the guide who lives there to this day and she admitted that only about 15 ppl as most have moved into the town and even big cities. She admitted the chief does travel and I am quite sure he does not wear that attire everywhere he goes.
Yes, geared toward tourists but not a waste a time as it did provide insight into culture and such customs/experiences/meals were authentic. We went midday and that meal was one of the best meals we had will in South AFrica, and we did the big city of Cape town and no meals there rivaled this ckn stew, cooked pumpkin, cabbage and special bread. Great experience!

Better things to do.

I regret wasting time, in this beautiful country, to see this apathetic tour. The guide, the chief and the medicine woman presented a script probably too many times. The two mud huts that comprised the 'market' had the usual tourist guff. I rarely write a bad review but feel I should warn folk how underwhelming and expensive this experience was. We are off to drive round this beautiful area, watch the incredible wildlife and meet the warm and welcoming local people.

Amazing

It was very interesting to meet the chief Ngobeni and his family and the healer of the tribe. The local guide explained us all about Shangana customs and culture.
We visited in some afternoon and there were only the chief and some family members, I recommend booking in advance to the evening festival to watch drum session and shangana dances and have dinner with the shangana family!
The Marula Market is small, it has a few handicrafts. But we loved visiting the village and to meet the family! Amazing experience.

A little bit to expensive for what has to offer. We were there at the opening hour and saw the chief and all the others inhabitants of the village arrving in the pick-up truck form the city. It spoiled all the wander of it.

PERFECT FOR AN AUTHENTIC CULTURAL EXPERIENCE
Jul 2018 • Business
This is NOT Disneyland, this IS however the truth, of how people lived and in some cases still live to this day - this Village is self-sustained with NO government support -
they make do with the resources they have - and everyone of my 20 guests on this day agreed - it was real, it was what they had hoped to learn, to see and experience.
They all gave this experience two thumbs up.

This is not South Beach Miami or 6 flags of Texas -
Please understand that you will have an honest and humble experience at Shangana Cultural Village - bookings essential especially for the dancing and drumming functions.

Will I take my next group here:
ABSOLUTELY YES - ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT

A night of great dancing with a meal
May 2018 • Friends
The setting was very atmospheric and the dance group provided an energetic routine and performance. The meal was plentiful although a little bland. A good way to spend an evening with friends.
