A different pace of life... in Siyafunda Bush Camp
Apr 2018 • Solo
I spent two beautiful weeks at the Siyafunda Endangered Species Project, the bush camp.

The first thing that surprised me was how comfy the camp was. I did not expect water that you can drink right from the tap or running water in toilets and showers. The tents were spacious enough to stand in and move around a bit, with cots and storage shelves. Nice communal area to chill during the siesta or socialise in.

But that is not what made it special...

The camp is not fenced and wild animals can (and sometimes do) walk through the camp, particularly at night, so you are given instructions how to behave in such situations.

The days start early, very early... you are pretty much out of the camp with first light... and you wake up to the sounds of birds chirping and animals roaring and whining, trying to guess what that is and how far...

I enjoyed the game drives which give the opportunity to get really close to the animals and stay a while, watching them. They don't seem to mind.

And even more so, I enjoyed the walks through the bush. You get to notice and learn a lot more about game tracking. And the animals, no matter how big or small, react completely differently when you are on foot. You're not just an observer any more but part of it... and the experience is peppered with some hair raising moments.

Evenings by the fire, talking to new people, tucking into simple food. Or an all out braai night. It's a different world!

With very little light pollution, the nights are dark and the sky is stunning. The stars are right on top of you. And I can now tell the time by the southern cross :)

The rangers are great! Friendly, fun and welcoming. They are very knowledgeable too and happy to share that with you. And you get to better understand that part of the world, wildlife conservation efforts, and what Siyafunda is about.

Volunteers get involved in some light tasks that give the day a purpose, like data collection on game drives and walks, reserve maintenance, collecting fire wood, and contributions to cooking and cleaning.

Thanks to the crew at Siyafunda, you all made it very special!

I spent 2 fabulous weeks at bush camp, I really didn't want to leave. The camp site is fairly basic but has everything you need, in fact the lack of wifi was a joy. At main camp there is wifi and people spent lots of time on their phones!! The Rangers are very knowledgeable and take you out on a drive or walk twice daily, where you get pretty close to lions, elephants, cheetah, as well as learning about tracks and the animals behaviour. I loved it and would love to go back!!

Best experience of my life
Feb 2017 • Solo
I spent a week at their bush camp and it was the most intimate, in touch in the wild, experience I could have ever imagined. Saw all the big 5, almost daily, and much much more. Highly recommend spending your holiday in Africa with these amazing people.

Siya-Fantastic!
Jun 2017 • Solo
What a Fantastic Experience!! It is quite simply; A Different World!

Siyafunda provides an excellent opportunity to get involved with Conservation within the Greater Makalali Game Reserve.

Mike and his team of Rangers; Emma,Sam and Casper, alongside new staff Kayla & Derek and intern Dylan provide a friendly, welcoming, fun and educational experience.

They are very knowledgeable and happy to share that with you in order for you to have a better understanding of their African Bush and what Siyafunda is all about to include the positive and negative issues that go alongside this, for e.g; poaching and how they seek to proactively reduce/stop it.

I spent 2 weeks at main camp (Twines) and 1 week at Bush Camp (Endangered Species Camp) and I have some great memories.

Volunteers get involved in game drives, game walks, data collection (which I feel does require some development), maintenance of the reserve, hide observations as well as contributing to the cooking and cleaning and collecting fire wood.

Accommodation is simple but comfortable and evenings are spent around the camp fire with the new people you meet and friends you make along the way. You also get free time during the day to enjoy the sun or play cards with the group.

The reserve has the Big 5 although I was only able to see the Big 4, (due to the illusive leopard) I was very happy to see them plus wild dogs, hippos as well as the numerous other general game and other wildlife.

Seeing the Big 5 can simply come down to being in the right place at the right time; luck and timing, alongside the Rangers experience.

Can the Volunteer Program be developed/streamlined; Absolutely but these are minor points and I am confident from my experience that the Rangers were aware of them but it certainly does not detract from the Fabulous experience I had.

You will have a lot of fun, learn a lot, see a lot and meet some great people from all over the world as well as having the feeling of wanting to return.

Thank you Guys!

Can't recommend highly enough!
Mar 2017 • Solo
I spent 3 weeks at the main camp from Feb to March 2017 and had the most incredible time. All the rangers- Emma, Sam, Georgina and Casper- are extremely knowledgeable and really go out of their way to ensure that each and every volunteer has the best possible experience. Makalali is a beautiful Reserve with a fantastic range of wildlife, and I was fortunate enough to see all the Big 5 within my first 3 days. I can't wait to return, and would recommend Siyafunda to anyone looking for a life changing experience!

Most amazing experience of my life
Feb 2017 • Solo
Where do I begin? This entire experience is unlike anything you will ever experience. The wildlife is abundant, the cause is crucial, and the people are amazing! Some truly great experiences here that I will never forget. I stayed in the "bush camp" (and I am generally not a camping type) and enjoyed it more than words could ever describe. Tons and tons of animals. We even saw the "Big 5" all on one drive my last day. Contact them via IG and let your adventure begin. Cannot wait to return

Extraordinary South African Game Reserve!
Jul 2016 • Business
We visited Siyafunda with a group of university students in July of 2016 and could not have had a more wonderful time. Game drives and walks twice a day, with amazing sightings on each drive, including leopards, lions, hyenas, elephants, wild dogs and many other species. The accommodations were relaxed and comfortable, the staff and guides incredibly warm and helpful!

Fabulous!
Jul 2016 • Friends
Simple but comfortable accommodations in an incredible location. We watched lions and rhinos drinking from the watering hole right in front of the camp, and nyalas regularly grazed by our rooms. Wonderful campfire area and lounge with internet, books, and movies. We had fantastic game drives every day!

Immersed in Nature
Jun 2016 • Friends
On our first night, we drove about 200 meters from the main camp to see lions chowing down on a giraffe they'd just killed under the light of a full moon. Each night, we fell asleep to the sound of lions chuffing. Nyalas were bucking behind my cabin one afternoon when we returned from game drive, and they regularly walked by the conference room during our lectures from guest speakers. Mike Job is a thoughtful and caring host, and Togo and Alpha and the rest of the staff are wonderful, too.
