About
A working dairy farm in the city is not something one would expect to find nowadays. Situated in the heart of Gauteng, in the beautiful village of Irene, the Van der Byl family (now in their fifth generation) have generously welcomed locals and visitors from afar, on to their farm for many years – allowing young and old to enjoy the dairy farm experience without having to leave the city. With its rustic farm feel, Irene Farm has never lost its old-world charm although it has expanded and developed its offerings over the years. Two restaurants on-site (The Barn and The Deck), a great kiddies playground and areas to stroll around whilst enjoying the farm animals in beautiful surrounds make it a memorable family day out. If you are looking for farm style, home baked goodness and fresh farm milk, then a visit to The Dairy Shop situated at the entrance to the farm is a must. In addition to this, it’s a wonderful venue for weddings, kiddies parties and special occasions.

Peace amidst the bustle
Jun 2021 • Family
We love this place and we visit it quite often. It is probably best to book at the restaurants if you plan to go midday, but it is really worth it. Well kept with little streams, ponds, and some pretty old trees to explore after a good meal.

Nice early morning, but packed mid day...
Apr 2021
I visited Irene farm as part of a weekend away in Gauteng.
I stayed in Irene and decided to have a early morning run in the neiboughood. Part of my route was Irene farm... It was really nice and peacefull to run in the farm and among the farm animal. As it was a run, I haven't spent that much time to cuddle the animals, but decided to come back later.
And I did, but when I arrived at 12pm, it was totally packed with people.
It is obviously a very popular outing for famillies having kids. The peace I experienced in the morning was not there anymore and it was actually to crowed for me.
It is a very nice spot if you chose your time of visit...

No pride in hospitality
Oct 2020 • Couples
The service from the hostesses is terrible.
Got served at the barn, take away window by a lady Charmaine, she was rude and could not care less to listen to the enquiries.
It is people like her that makes patrons not to return. There was again contradicting messages from Waitrons assisting.

No clear message on buffet hours and prices. We ended up going à la carte.
The Barn is definitely not the place to go for a great service, no ice bucket for a wine bottle, served with plastic tumblers for water.

The food is standard for the price quoted.

Day out with cows.
Jul 2020
Kids could run around and play with stick in the stream. Feed cows some hay. Look at some ducks. See hens with baby chicks. Bought tasty milkshakes.

Lovely food but bakery awful
Apr 2019 • Couples
We enjoyed a lovely, well cooked lunch at the farm. Pork belly, fish and chips, lovely salads. Good waiter too. On the way out we bought an assortment of cakes. Every one was awful. Cronuts, dry with no filling. Gritty caramel cake. Chocolate eclairs with artificial cream, on a dairy farm! Come on guys, look into this, your bakery is letting you down.

Lovely day out with granddaughter 3yrs, on a farm with cows and calves.
Mar 2020 • Family
My first visit and reminded me of a Cape Wineland. People everywhere enjoying good food, lots of picnic spaces, cows being milked and granddaughter loved the visit to the calves and streams of water and the fountain. Delicious milkshakes and had a lovely Banting salad. Lots of play area for children. Cloakrooms look like Harrods in England, very posh. Lovely atmosphere and get together of families and celebrations.

Farm on your doorstep in Pretoria
Feb 2020
Seeing the excitement and amazement in my grandson's eyes makes this trip so worth it.He is asking everyday " when are we going again?" There is obviously always things that can be improved and done better if you look with a critical eye. It is a place to CALM DOWN AND RELAX. Forget all the worries and just enjoy. Beautiful nature and peaceful outing. Definitely a place worth visiting over and over again. Enjoyed the food on all our visits so far.

Tourist trap
Dec 2019 • Family
Visited with children and grandchildren (7 years old). Nice place but no one was impressed. Relatively decent food but way over priced. We will not return.

A busy country venue in the city
Jan 2020
Excellent food and the surroundings are special. It is not often one visits a farm within 20 minutes of the city. After a great meal, it is lovely to stroll through the grounds. The calves are especially appealing.

A farm in the city
Feb 2020
Beautiful trees, grassed areas, stables, fountains and restaurants. Bring the family, friends or kids and enjoy the peace and tranquility. However, Saturdays and Sundays might be quite busy. If you can, go there on a weekday.
Kids can experience some farm ambiance with cattle and poultry roaming the fields. However, it still is a farm and comes with the sounds and smells. Still an excellent experience.
