Worth a visit. Great presentation of the mint, history and lesser known, interesting facts - like they print money for a vast array of countries ranging from the UK to some unusual countries.
Very nicely done. Excellent selection of collector coins on show and to purchase, and of course investing in Kruger Rands. The tour was closed when we went - advise calling, because the website is/was a little misleading - but can only imagine how much cooler the visit would be including it :)

The Gold Place

Worth a visit - but if you can't afford to break the bank I will not recommend you to go to SA mint.
Even though it is a nice experience to see all types of expensive coins that a regular middle-class SA citizen can't afford. But then there are the silver coins which are a little bit more affordable.
If you visit our country you are welcome to visit SA MInt you will even be able to buy some nice gold coins with your own currency.

Quick trip to buy some coins to gift my family and friends
Oct 2018 • Family
I visited the Mint when my children were in school and again next year to buy some gifts. What a disappointment! Previously there were guided tours, a shop with excellent items and display cabinets to tempt the tourist, and a restaurant. The kids were even able to mint their own coin. This time around though, it is similar to visiting your local police station to lodge a case - table with official, wait your turn, disappear behind a screen to collect your order for you, armed security guards just in case.... What a let down. The highlight was the limited stock of coins I was able to purchase, given that most of the items on the photocopied list they produced were not available any more.

Really great
May 2019 • Family
This is a great place to visit and really interesting and informative. The staff here are exceptional , the security guards at the entrance were great. the people in the Museum and shop were fantastic we dealt with Petunia who is a great ambassador for the mint.
They are attentive without being in your face and very pleasant.
Worth a visit

Wow what a mint!
Jan 2019 • Friends
This place is amazing, give yourself a whole day to tour the mint, plenty of refreshment options available as you tour the facilities, mint your own personalised coin, see the huge minting machines in full operation and the gift shop is overflowing with souvenirs you’ll be keen to take home with you. The staff are all extremely friendly and ready to assist you at every turn. If you are anywhere near the area a real must visit destination!

A " Good" rating would be appropriate.

Exhibition area very recently reopened after an uplift.
Note , you cannot tour the Mint itself.
The tour offered previously was apparently just around the exhibition room but now the uplift has made a guided tour unnecessary according to one of the staff.
So you are confined to the exhibition room where there are quite interesting information boards, some old equipment and displays of coins etc.
The next room has an impressive display of commemorative coins, Kruger Rands etc which obviously some are for sale.
The most expensive being R2000000

We were approached by one staff member who gave us more information and "coined" a R5 on an old press.
He had obviously been working in the Mint as he knew a friend of mine who had designed some of coins decades back.
It would have been good if he had been a "guide"

All in all the visit passed a pleasant hour or so away, we learnt new things and importantly managed to keep our credit card safely tucked away.
There are no refreshments available.
Children would get bored quickly i imagine.

Nice place to pop in
Jun 2018 • Family
If you are interested in buying coins or just looking at coins... then this is a real treat for a quick pop in.

There is tours available for groups but they must be organised in advance.
There is a small museum next to the coin shop and some fascinating coinage... If you are in the area and passing by it is well worth a pop in. Entrance is free.

Nice for Viewing Coins from South Africa and Beyond
Feb 2017 • Solo
...a different story if you are there to buy. For example, the 4 coin (1.875oz) Big Cats set was SAR60,000 2X the gold spot price. The Ocean silver set 3x spot. So check out the artifacts and small collection of historical coins from South Africa and around the world - but be prepared to spend a mint to get bullion and commemorates

Worthwhile stop

It is worthwhile to visit Coin World for their permanent exhibition on the numismatic history of South Africa. There are some interesting coins on display and the opportunity to buy your own collection items.

I buy coins from them, but the place just has a nice feel, and I think it will be a good touristy thing to do ...
