About
Great, safe, fun and amazing experience for the entire family. If you can swim, we can teach you to snorkel. Hundreds of fish, corals and if you're lucky Octopus, Nudibranchs and amazing ocean life.
We have been amazed at this wilderness that is right on our doorstep. We have found tidal pools filled with corals and unusual creatures, watched dolphins surfing the back line, been awed by whales breaching offshore and been very chuffed with ourselves for finding secret coves and bays where you're unlikely to see a single soul....And all this in the bustling holiday capital of South Africa! We were surprised and sure you will be too.
If you're a visitor to the North Coast and wondering what to do / looking for things to do in Ballito or Salt Rock, then you should consider joining us on one of our Snorkeling Safaris - If you can swim, we can teach you to Snorkel. It's simple, safe and loads of fun for the whole family. Not to be missed.

We had an absolutely amazing introduction to snorkeling with Michelle as our guide (Discover Snorkel Safari). She was very kind and knowledgeable and taught us all the basics, as well as pointed out some beautiful marine life in the tidal pool for us view. We were amazed at how much there was to see in the tidal pool - colorful corals and hundreds of fish! Hot chocolate on the beach after the session was a bonus treat :) I'd recommend this experience to any person looking for a new local hobby.

My wife and me were excited to be snorkeling after 5 years, and for our first time in SA. We found the booking process very easy - we queried online, Michy got in touch with us and ensured we were booked for the early morning the following morning.
The next morning, we met Erin, our guide for the morning, who was already waiting for us with all the equipment, and had a big smile to greet us. At the tidal pool, after the initial introduction and briefing, we went into the water and it was a fairy tale thereafter. At any point we wanted to take a break and stand on our feet, Erin would immediately look at us, smile wide and inquire if all was good.
There was so much knowledge that we could gain from that session, about the varieties of fish and their behaviour. To add to the experience, there was not a shade of commercial attitude, where we were allowed to snorkel at our leisure, and even when the time was up, we were not hurried into getting out. She just patiently waited as we were still enjoying that world under the sea.
And, the countless number of photographs for free, that we can cherish for a lifetime - Thank you Erin for the wonderful photos, and thanks Michy for ensuring we don't miss on this experience.
We are coming back for this, more often

We are always looking for places to snorkel, we have been to Zanzibar and Bali but never knew you could snorkel in SA. You always think you have to fly to some exotic place. Michy is a very good guide and helpful.

A wonderful experience. Went snorkeling in salt Rock tidal pools. All equipment supplied with a coffee at the end. Our guide, Karina was knowledgeable and helpful. I especially appreciated her helping out my 8 year old. This allowed me to enjoy the experience a bit more. The colder than normal weather also meant that the wet suits were very needed.

We booked a snorkel with Tidal Tao Snorkelling Safaris and were absolutely delighted with the service we received. Our guides were friendly and helpful and we were especially impressed with our guide who rescheduled our dive to the next day because the visibility was not up to standard on the first day. We were treated to hot chocolate at the nearby cafe after our dive and received underwater photographs. Definitely worth it, a fantastic experience.

I was blown away by what I thought would be a simple snorkeling event in Ballito. We were taken to Chaka's Rock tidal pool and were amazed at the variety of sea life available for us to see. The guide was highly knowledgeable and very keen to pass on her love for environment sustainability. I would highly recommend Tidal Tao for snorkeling and will be trying out their other offerings in the near future.

Good morning! We'll be in Ballito from the 20th to the 24th September and it looks like it will be raining most of the time we're there. Can we do Night snorkelling in the rain? Or should we try another time?
Thanks a mil!

Thanks so much for getting in touch. The weather (especially in spring) changes so much and so fast, so could very likely be gorgeous weather on the 20th September. We find the forecasts are not very accurate until a few days prior. That being said, yes, can absolutely night snorkel if it's raining, the rain is not a problem, more very heavy winds or poor visibility which can cause us to cancel a snorkel. Please could I ask you to drop us an email for any reservations and can keep in touch re. weather as the time draws nearer. Many thanks Tidal Tao

Do you guys provide any lifejackets for non swimmers still interested in Snorkeling?
Written 5 January 2018
Hi Mary, sorry, we don't provide life jackets, it's a spot risky all round if you can't swim or are not comfortable in the water. Although the spots we snorkel in are generally shallow and well protected from the open ocean. You don't need to be a strong swimmer but should be able to swim on your own. Kind Regards, Tidal Tao
