Sani Pass Day Tour from Durban

A drive through Sani Pass is a must for those traveling to KwaZulu-Natal. Leave Durban and pass rural villages on the way towards the Lesotho border. Transfer to a 4x4 vehicle to climb the 1,000 meters, passing a variety of wildlife along the way, then drive through the Lesotho border. Take in the views and stop at the Highest Pub in Africa, before winding down the mountain pass.

We did a 1 day tour with Major Adventures and it was an amazing day out. Elias fetched us from our hotel. Before leaving he completed all paperwork for border control. Elias is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to the history of this area. It was a wonderful learning experience. He stopped at various points for us to take photos. Depsite the notoriously dangerous road we felt safe as all times. Highly recommeneded. Dont forget to take a jacket, water and your passport.

What a Fantastic trip! We prefer to usually do trips my ourselves but this was better to go with the experts. Elias are guide was excellent , friendly and knowledgeable . Even if we had an 4x4 vehicle I would have still preferred to go on the trip as the road up the Sani Pass is extremely windy and very rocky , Elias was an experienced driver and knew the road.

We wanted so much to do the Sani Pass and explore Lesotho, but it was difficult getting information about the shape of Lesotho roads and passes, back in Europe. Even in South Africa it was difficult: in Underberg proper, most agencies could not be bothered and told us to go check their website for tours...(we could not go up alone as we did not hire a 4wheel drive, but a SUV) However, we got lucky when we met Gardi from Major Adventures: Friendly, professional, knowledgeable, she explained at great length what the actual shape of the roads in Lesotho is like, and why the Sani Pass is impassable without a 4wheel drive. We would have loved going on a private 4 day trip into Lesotho with her agency, but she was totally booked for our dates. Nevertheless, she helped us shape a plan for touring Lesotho on our own, using Qachas Nek Pass to get into the country. She even went out of her way to provide us with maps before we left, even though she was at a fonction. We cannot recommend enough this agency!

We booked in advance with Major Adventures and they were quick to answer our questions. We were lucky enough to be the only ones booked for the day so had a private tour. The vehicle was comfortable and we felt very safe with the driver. The driver was knowledgeable and took the time to stop for pictures and explain different things we passed. We stoped in a local village and had lunch (at own cost) at the pub. It is a long drive but the views are spectacular. Construction is already underway until the South African border control so that will shorten future trips. The route is difficult so would recommend doing a tour with an experienced driver with a 4x4.
