In a prior life I worked as a wildlife biologist from the USA specializing in birds. I have 7 bird books onboard our boat and couldn't wait to get to South Africa and see the animals and birds. We all have dreamed of seeing these animals we've watched on television documentaries and read about in National Geographic. That said, we just had the best safari/ guide service we could ever imagine with owner, Hayden Elliot from Outdoor Africa (hayden@outdoor-africa.com). We were just as ecstatic to meet Hayden, as we were to see (close up) rhinos, elephants, lions, baboons, zebras, hyenas etc. He knew every bird, reptile, tree, animal, blade of grass, and their habitats, and vocalizations in Hluhluwe/iMfolozi game reserve. It is hit or miss to see the Big 5, you can rent a car, buy a park ticket, and see animals without a guide but, you won't get the historical or wildlife conservation perspective, nor ID all the species by their songs as you drive by with the windows open. Hayden grew up seeing these animals and he was just as pie eyed and enthusiastic by my barrage of questions as if it was his first day too.
Me and my captain are in Richards Bay, South Africa. We crossed the Indian Ocean and sailed down the Moz Channel. We only had only one day to really see it all. Due to Covid19 and the reduced number of clientele and bookings, we were able to book this reservation otherwise Hayden is normally busy traveling to Kenya (where he grew up), and all the other parks in SA taking people on week to month long safaris. We were privileged to have him for one day. Hayden was like being with mega conservationist of our generation, David Attenborough. Dream come true.
The company was called, Outdoor Africa.

Apparently clients who had booked for their feedback was maximumly appreciative.
Since it was made to be a 3 hours tour and extended to a extra party and more activities as a give back.

T-shirts and free drinks were served on the boat cruise

I'm sad to report that relative to our other South African safari experiences, this was disappointing. It was an expensive trip which entailed a two hour transfer each way from Richards Bay cruise port to Imfolozi and a little over three and a half hours of mostly barren wildlife viewing. I understand that wildlife spotting can not be guaranteed, but I got the impression that our guide was not trying very hard or was not experienced in seeking out likely viewing sites. We saw zebra, giraffe, nyala, impala and kudu, but rhino eluded us except for a brief and distant rhino backside in the bush. We travelled in the dust of another vehicle. A mid-morning breakfast stop was nothing special. High Imfolozi expectations, undelivered.

We are very sorry you had a bad experience, generally the rangers go out of their way to give our guests the very best service they can.

I arranged a day tour for 3 from a cruise ship. EC Safaris made up the numbers in a minivan to 7. Sonnia and Peter were good to deal with prior and emails were always answered promptly.
Sonnia and Peter were waiting for us when we disembarked and Peter was our guide for the day - there was also a driver. The van was comfortable, clean and air conditioned and bottled was provided for us to drink. Peter gave us some commentary on the drive to the park.
Once we got to the game park we transferred to an open air vehicle with a driver/guide. You need to have fairly ok mobility to get into and out of the safari vehicle.
We had a wonderful day and saw plenty of animals. The lunch served was also very nice.
I would happily book with ECSafaris again.

Had a great day out with Sonnia in Imfolozi Park. She was waiting for us when we got off the boat and returned us there 9 hours later. This trip was more expensive than the trips organised by the boat but vastly superior as it was just the two of us and Sonnia in her smart 4 wheel drive. We saw lots of animals and not a lot of other vehicles. Sadly we couldn’t find lions or leopards, but there were plenty of rhinos, buffalo and elephants. We got up close to giraffes, zebra, impala, kudus and many more. Sonnia knew the best places to go and where the latest sightings had been. Would definitely recommend.

East Coast Safari provided us transportation by mini van with three other couples from our ship to the game park. They were there early and waiting on us when we were able to get off the ship. The driver was good, although there was not much commentary on the way. We had a great tour with a game ranger/driver via a park vehicle. Our ranger was very informative and we saw many animals. It is a beautiful park and I highly recommend it. I would book with East Coast Safaris again for transportation to the park.

We travelled with a cruise ship (two adults, three children (4 + 2 + 2 years old)). We booked ecs as shore excursions. Everything was fine (pick up and transport back to the ship, communication). Private needs were respected, we never felt uncomfortable. They really took care of us, so that we succeeded in seeing a lot of animals and took a lot of pictures. I can fully recommend them and would do it again. Keep up your excellent job!

We booked this in advance as a shore excursion from Richards Bay, and were very pleased that we did! It was a refreshing change from the large ship big-bus tours--a wonderful game drive where we were lucky to see elephant, zebra, rhinos, giraffes, wart hogs, vervet monkeys, etc. Peter and Sonnia also served a very nice picnic lunch, and kindly supplied water on the game drive. They had even waited patiently when the cruise ship was delayed in arrival for two hours, without complaint--so much appreciated!

We didn't expect to see anything as the day was brutally hot, but thanks to a skillled guide who knows the park like the back of his hand we had a wonderful experience and saw the BIG FIVE and many others up close an personal. Teriffic day.
