About
Experience nature’s grandeur at the KwaZulu-Natal National Botanical Garden in Pietermaritzburg. This garden’s Victorian past is evident in its magnificent specimens of northern hemisphere plants. One of the most spectacular features is the majestic avenue of London Plane Trees.

We absolutely love spending quality time with our family, and one of our favorite activities is having picnics in this wonderful outdoor spot. It's such a delightful experience, surrounded by nature, enjoying delicious food, and creating precious memories together. The fresh air and beautiful surroundings make it truly enjoyable and rejuvenating for all of us.

I decided to add the botanical gardens to my trip after seeing it here on TripAdvisor.
It was reasonably priced but after that there wasn't much.
The toilets weren't clean and the grounds didn't feel looked after. It felt unorganized and confusing.
There was construction taking place at the time with no attempt to make it blend in.
We walked around for an hour or so but decided to leave. Maybe it would have been better if we went further but we just really weren't impressed and decided our day out could be spent better elsewhere.

Lovely gardens with a lot of benches. No restaurant though. That was disappointing.
Good birding opportunities.

Most impressive walk in the park with own basket of a picnic lunch. The trees and the setting along the little river and in the forest are worth seeing.

The Pietermaritzburg Botanical Gardens are a good visit! As you enter you are created by a play ground and oak tree alley. Great spot for a picnic or leisurely stroll. Unfortunately they have been unable to hold down a coffee shop so you will have to take your own goods.

There is a restaurant, Braai areas and beautiful picnic spots. The park is clean and absolutely stunning. Very old trees and a nursery to buy plants

A favourite place for many residents and visitors in which to relax or walk. The plane tree avenue is magnificent in all seasons. There are spacious lawns for picnics; a recreation area for children; braai/barbecue fireplaces in a secluded corner; beautiful large trees, indigenous and exotic; ponds and wetlands which attract birds such as weavers, geese, herons, cormorants, hadeda ibis, and kingfishers. The flower beds have recently been replanted. The Kingfisher Lake is still undergoing draining and renovation at this time, and we hope that it will soon be completed. The wild area on the hillside is threaded with paths and steps which can be slippery in wet weather, but worth viewing in August/ September for the clivias in flower. More trees in the main gardens have been labelled recently. Do visit, if you want to walk or just need some peace and quiet.

The gardens are lovely, but not much is being done here. They are well maintained in general, but a bit run down in spots with some invasive species creeping in. No toilets and no cafe or restaurant which is a pity, but a lovely place for a walk around.

I wish there was still a restaurant on site.
However its a beautiful place to take walks and tons of pictures.
Also a safe place for a family picnic. Plenty of activities for little kids.

As a nature lover, I love getting lost in the outdoors. The gardens are huge and one of the eldest in the world (established in 1874!). Entrance fees for adults will cost you R27 and in my opinion is well worth the money.
I spent two hours trying to find my way to the highest point of the gardens because I refused to buy the garden map. If you enjoy exploring and getting lost, don't buy a map. However, if you have a tight schedule and like to be in control, purchasing a map is the sensible thing to do.
Overall the gardens were well maintained, homed a variety of species of plants and wildlife, and extremely family friendly.

Yes, but it should be on a cooler box or black plastic bag.
